The Diary of Tortov Roddle is a simple anime. The 2003 show follows the titular protagonist as he explores a calm, peaceful new land. Accompanying him is his long-legged pig with which he crosses the several towns sprawling across the desert.

In the Land of Leadale is an isekai anime following Keina Kagami. She has been sick for quite some time and is on life support. When the life support fails, she gets reincarnated into the body of a high-level character in the VRMMORPG, which is titled Leadale.
This character is named Cayna. She used to play the game before she got bedridden but notices that things have changed in Leadale. 8. Natsume Yuujinchou/Natsume’s Book of Friends (2008)
Takashi Natsume has had a hard time fitting into the school because of his ability to see peculiar creatures called “youkai”. He has been passed around from one foster home to the other. He is an isolated and lonely person. With time he begins to believe that he can never be loved or accepted into this world. He becomes a closed book to his current caretakers.
One day, Natsume breaks an intangible barrier that releases a mighty spirit in the form of a lucky cat, Madara. This cat notices that Natsume bears a striking resemblance to his late grandmother, Reiko Natsume, who had become popular in the world of youkai for creating the “Book of Friends.”
Now, the book lies with Natsume, along with the power over the youkai that Reiko defeated. While he has no interest in his powers, Natsume decides to uphold his grandmother’s legacy to protect it from evil youkai.
Madara strikes up a deal with him that he will hand him over the book once his time has come, and until then, Madara is his unofficial bodyguard called Nyanko-Sensei. With time, Natsume learns to uphold better relations with both youkai and the humans around him.

10. Mononoke (2007)
“Medicine Seller” is a lethal and mystic master of the occult who travels across different palaces in Feudal Japan. He searches for hostile spirits called “Mononoke” and slays them. When he finds out about such a spirit, he first has to identify its Form, its Truth, and its Reason. He can only lift his Exorcism Sword to defeat it once these have been identified.
His investigation into Form, Truth, and Reason is a long and intensive psychological process. He has to confront and put himself in danger before he can ever take out a weapon against it. His journey takes him to an inn where a pregnant woman called Shino finally finds a place to rest herself.
The owner of the inn reluctantly puts her in their last vacant room. While she tries to relax, the room presents its hostility in the form of a band of Mononoke called the Zashiki Warashi. The Medicine Seller must utilize his skills in time to learn of its Form, Truth, and Reason before it is too late.
11. Mononoke Hime/ Princess Mononoke (1997)
Mononoke Hime is set in a village called Emishi, which gets attacked by a demon boar. Amidst this, the young prince Ashitaka puts his life on the line for the safety of his tribe. The beast utters curses at the prince while it dies, giving him demonic powers that will chip away at his life with time.
The elders of the village instruct him to travel toward the west in search of a cure. He arrives at Tatara, the Iron Town. He finds himself getting caught up in a conflict between Lady Eboshi of Tatara, who is promoting deforestation, and Princess San, who is furious at the destructive activity at the hands of humans.
During the two clash, Ashitaka tries to solve things between them while he also battles the demons inside of him. It is a story of the war between technology and nature and how harmony can be achieved between the two.
12. xxxHOLiC (2006)
The anime is about Kimihiro Watanuki, who has the ability to see spirits and several other supernatural creatures. He personally finds this ability quite annoying and also dislikes having it.

Aria the Animation is set in a peaceful city called Neo Venezia on the planet Aqua (previously named Mars). The city is a faithful replica of Venice on the planet Manhome (previously called Earth). To boost tourism and make sure tourists enjoy the city, companies that offer guided tours via gondola were created. One of these is the Aria Company.
This is where the teenage, free-spirited Undine (guide), Akari Mizunashi works. She is from Manhome and this is the story of her as she grows close to the people she shows around Neo Venezine. She also learns several valuable life lessons along the way.
14. Ookami to Koushinryou/ Spice and Wolf (2008)
Spice and Wolf follow Holo, who is a strong wolf deity that the entire village of Pasloe respects for blessing the annual harvest. However, as time goes by and the village grows self-sustained, Holo is forgotten. She becomes a mere figment in folklore.
A traveling merchant called Kraft Lawrence comes by the village. Holo tells him that if he is to take her to her northern home in Yoitsu, she will be his business partner. Kraft learns of her ability to judge the nature of anyone correctly. With her judgment and his negotiation skills, he comes closer to opening his own shop. While he travels with her, he soon realizes that his aspirations are becoming something else entirely.
15. Haibane Renmei/ Charcoal Feather Federation (2002)
A young Haibane was born from a cocoon in the village of Old Home. She has a Halo and small gray wings, and she does not understand the world without the memories of her past. She has been named Rakka for the dream of falling she had while she was inside the cocoon.
She adjusts herself to life in this weird town. The Haibane cannot leave the village or go near the walls that surround it. 16. Dororo (2019)
Daigo Kagemitsu is a greedy Samurai lord whose land is dying. He is ready to do anything to make his land lively again, be it renouncing Buddha or making a pact with the demons. His prayers are answered when 12 demons aid his prefecture’s growth. But they demand a price.
When Kagemitsu’s first son was born, he had no limbs, skin, nose, eyes, or ears. Yet, he lived. This child was soon disposed of in the river and forgotten. This child is saved by a medicine man who gives him prosthetics and weapons, so he can sustain himself and fight for himself when need be.
The boy grows up without the ability to feel, see and hear. He sets out on a journey to seek vengeance upon the demons that have ruthlessly taken him as a sacrifice. With each demon that he kills, he regains one of the senses that was rightfully his. He wanders off alone until he meets an orphaned boy called Dororo. This pair of castaways now must navigate through a world full of terror and demons.
17. Hotarubi No Mori E/ To The Forest of Fireflies (2011)
While on a summer vacation at her grandfather’s house, the six-year-old Hotaru Takegawa gets lost in a forest. This place is known to be inhabited by spirits. While she cries out with desperation, a mysterious masked boy named Gin offers to help her.
She gets excited at finding another person and tries to hug him. But he rudely fends her off. However, she soon learns that Gin has a curse laid upon him. If touched by a human being, he will disappear forever. Gin requests her never to return to the forest.
She does not listen and continues to visit him whenever she can over the years. The feelings they have for each other grow stronger with time. They struggle with the cruel boundary that invisibly exists between them.
18. The Mystic Archives of Dantalion (2011)
It has been six months since Lord Hugh Anthony (known as Huey) lost his grandfather, Sir Wesley Disward, who collected rare books. The late man’s will states that the possession of his manor is only possible when the person takes guardianship over Bibliotheca Mystica de Dantalian (an archive containing forbidden information) and also takes care of a girl called Dalian.
While Huey settles into his Grandfather’s manor, an old rival of the latter and also his killer arranges a meeting with Huey, who soon learns that the murderer has a book called the “Phantom Book.” It is cursed, and Wesley tries to seal it away.

At first, it is nothing, but a wolf dies near it, and that is where we see its regenerative abilities. It can take the shape of any living being that dies near it. It becomes the wolf. The wolf wanders around the snowy terrain until it comes across a house.
In the house, there is a young boy who is the last one of his tribe left behind while they all go in search of “Paradise.” He believes that the ones he loves dearly have not forsaken him and will come back for him. He had a wolf called Joann and mistakes this newborn wolf for his own.
When some time passes, the boy decides to follow his tribe in search of paradise. He takes the world with him to the dangerously cold path. The boy dies on the way, and the wolf gains another form in the form of him. The anime follows this newly formed boy as he explores a vast world and meets new people.
20. Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit (2007)
Against the backdrop of a cataclysmic drought, the Star Readers of the Shin Yogo Empire struggle to devise a plan to prevent such a disaster. Ancient myths say that the first emperor slew the water demon to prevent drought alongside his eighth warriors. If such a water demon may come again, its death will result in salvation.
Surprisingly, the water demon manifests itself in the body of the emperor’s son, Prince Chagum. The emperor orders the sacrifice of his son to save the kingdom. During this time, a mysterious spear-wielding mercenary called Balsa arrives in the kingdom.
After saving Chagum from an assassination attempt, Balsa is appointed by Chagum’s mother to save him from the emperor and his hunters. Due to a sacred vow she once made, she accepts the appointment. Moribito is about Balsa and her journey in protecting Chagum while also learning about life.
21. Hell Girl (2005)
It is widely said that when you seek revenge, you must dig two graves. This rings true for those who use the Hell Correspondence website. This web domain becomes accessible at the stroke of midnight. Whoever inputs the name of their grudge is visited by Ai Enma, the Hell Girl.
Ai explains to the person that the person they hate will go to hell, but they will also end up in hell when they die. Some pay high prices for their revenge, and others die an uncertain death. When he is at his lowest point, a carefree man named Yaichi recruits him as his personal bodyguard on a whim. However, Masa’s life as a bodyguard is not free of innocence. 26. Ayakashi: Classic Japanese Horror (2006)
Ayakashi is a compilation of three distinct horror stories. First is “Yotsuya Kaidan,” the story of a wife who was betrayed by her husband and now seeks vengeance even in death. The second is “Tenshu Monogatari,” the story of a forbidden love between a human and a Goddess. Lastly, “Bakeneko” shows a mysterious cat monster with a vendetta against a family.
27. Requiem from the Darkness (2003)
When Yamaoka Momosuke gets tired of writing riddles for little children, he decides to put together grim and scary stories. He wishes to publish these in an anthology called Hyakumonogatari (One Hundred Tales).
While he is researching old myths and legends, he meets a mysterious trio called “Ongyou.” They are actually detectives who are also studying these legends so they can bring those who are in the wrong to justice. 28. Serial Experiments Lain (1998)
Girls at a certain school keep getting disturbing emails from their classmate Chisa Yomoda, including the awkward and introverted fourteen-year-old Lain Iwakura. But here is the thing, Chisa is dead of suicide.
Lain does not like technology, nor does she know much about how to use it. When she opens the email, she is sent to Wired, a virtual world of communication networks.
Her life is turned upside down as she starts to witness cryptic mysteries every now and then. Weird men called “Men in Black” appear wherever she goes. The difference between the virtual and real worlds disappears rapidly as she encounters bizarre incidents.
29. Zankyou no Terror/ Terror in Resonance (2014)
There was a terrorist attack on a nuclear facility in Japan, and all that remains as proof of it is the word “VON” painted in red there. The government is baffled by their utter helplessness in curbing the attack. The police have been desperately searching for the perpetrators. The public does not know anything.
This is changed when six months later, a video surfaces on the internet. It shows two young boys who refer to themselves as the “Sphinx” and directly challenge the police while also threatening to cause destruction across Tokyo.
The police are largely ineffective in finding them and cannot deal with the mass panic. They struggle to find clues, with Detective Kenjirou Shibazaki caught in the midst of it. The anime follows Nine and Twelve, the boys from Sphinx. These boys cause destruction around them while trying to bury their tragic truth.
30. Eve no Jikan/ Time of Eve (2010)
Time of Eve shows a futuristic world where keeping Android housekeepers is a common practice. The society here abides by the Three Laws of Robotics that must be followed by all androids. Under the Robot Ethics Committee, Androids are treated as lowly.
A minority of people do adore the androids and are called “android-holics”, and they are collectively shunned by society. Rikuo Sakisaka has been raised to go along with society’s perception of androids; he is aware that they are not humans.
This is changed one day when he discovers a strange message in the activity log of his household android named Sammy. He is then led to Eve no Jikan, a café with a strange rule- of no discrimination between humans and androids. Rikuo tries to learn more about this shop and about Sammy’s unnatural behavior.
31. Death Parade (2015)
The two outcomes of death have most naturally been heaven or hell. Death Parade brings forward a third realm that humans can ascend to after their death- Quindecim. It is the bar where people who die at the same time can enter.
Decim is the enigmatic bartender of the bar while also being the arbiter. He makes judgments on people who come here by making them play a life-threatening game. The game is able to determine whether the player’s soul will be able to get a new life or sent to the void, never to be seen again.
32. Puella Magi Madoka Magica (2011)
Madoka Kaname and Sayaka Miki are two normal middle school girls. This is changed when they come across a magical cat-like creature named Kyuubey and Homura Akemi, the new student at their school.
Kyuubey puts forward a condition for them, he will grant any of their wishes, but in return, they will have to become magical girls, gaining the power to fulfill their dreams. Homura, on the other hand, urges them not to take up the offer because not everything is as rosy as it seems. Madoka Magica is the story of these girls as they settle into the tough life of being a magical girl and the price of making dreams come true.
33. Sunday Without God (2013)
Sunday without God shows a world that has been forsaken by God. Due to this, lives cannot end, nor are new ones formed. Dead people walk amongst the living ones. God granted one last miracle before leaving. The “Gravekeepers” were created; they are people capable of putting the dead to rest through a proper burial.
Ai is a cheerful young girl who is the gravekeeper for her village in place of her late mother. One day a man who is supposedly Ai’s father, Hampnie Hambart, comes and kills everyone in the village. With no plans for the future, she decides to accompany him on his travels. On her way, she puts the dead in peace and learns more about this tragic world.
34. Violet Evergarden (2018)
The anime is set in a world where the Great War has ended after four long years. The continent of Telesis has been fractured into two but is now flourishing again. A young girl named Violet Evergarden got caught in this mess; she was raised for the sole purpose of decimating enemy soldiers.
Now in the hospital while the War ended. She is left merely with words left with her by the one she holds dear. But she does not understand the meaning of his words. While she recovers from her wounds, she starts to work at the CH Postal Services.
She then witnesses the work of an Auto Memory Doll, one who transcribes people’s thoughts into words on paper. Moved by the job, she decided to become a Doll herself. In the process, she discovers more of this world and more about herself.
35. Bakemonogatari (2009)
Koyomi Araragi is a third-year high school student who had recently survived an attack from a vampire with the help of a man called Meme Oshino, who lives in an abandoned building. While he has been brought back from vampirism and is a human again, he still possesses enhanced vision and enhanced hearing.
He tries to live a normal life as a high school student despite all that, with the help of his friend, class president Tsubasa Hanekawa. One day, he witnesses his classmate Hitagi Senjougahara fall down the stairs.
But she is free of injuries, and he finds out that she is practically weightless. Even when she tells him not to, Araragi insists on helping her. He goes back to Oshino for help. The anime revolves around demons and gods, as Araragi tries to help those who suffer from supernatural threats.
36. Alice to Zouroku (2017)
The anime shows Sana, a little girl who possesses a special ability called “Alice’s Dream.” Her power allows her to create anything just from her imagination. But she is a test subject in a laboratory, and that is all that she knows.

She is then given the task of protecting the people from the wrong things that come their way. She believes that she comes closer to saving her dead best friend when she helps people. Dreams can serve as windows into the minds of the people they come from, and they show their deepest desired and repressed memories. Paprika shows the happenings of a tech lab that has been developing something called the “DC Mini,” a device capable of delving into the dreams of other people.
The scientists working on this project relentlessly are Atsuko Chiba and Kosaku Tokita. They believe that such a technology can help them cure mental disorders and cater to them better. However, such technology, if left with the wrong people, can result in psychological terrorism and even mind-hacking activities.

40. Shadows House (2021)
Shadows House is the story of the titular Shadows, the pitch-black entities that are actually a family of nobles who live in a wide manor within the mountains, which are far away, free from humans. When a Shadow child is a little older, they are each assigned a Living Doll that attends to them. These dolls also act as their other half and look just like they would if they did not have a dark complexion.
Amongst these is Emilico, a cheerful doll who serves her soft-spoken master named Kate. Even when they differ in personalities, the former tries her best to fulfill her master’s needs. With time, Emilico gets to meet other dolls of other family members. Emilico is a curious girl, and she wishes to know it all. But dolls are told not to engage in trivialities.
41. Kimetsu no Yaiba/ Demon Slayer (2019)
Demon Slayer is the story of Kamado Tanjrou, who returns from the town to find his entire family murdered by a demon. Only his sister, Nezuko, is the one who is still breathing. He tries to take her to a doctor, but she has unfortunately turned into a demon. She tries to attack him on their way to town.
This is when a swordsman Tomioka Giyuu comes and tries to kill Nezuko. Tanjirou begs him not to kill his sister even when she is a demon, for he believes he can turn her into a human again. He even puts up a clever fight to save his sister.
Giyuu gets impressed by the boy’s drive and sends him off to his master Urokodaki who trains Tanjirou to become a swordsman called a “Demon Slayer.” Tanjirou begins a long adventure of saving people and trying to make his sister human again, all while learning more about the origins of demons and the Demon Slayer Organization that he works for.
42. Angels Beats (2010)
Death is one of mankind’s biggest mysteries to date. Humanity has remained in the dark for the longest time. The looming question of what happens to a person once they die is answered by the seventeen-year-old Yuzuru Otonashi.
Upon death, his memories are gone, and he finds himself in a strange dimension between life and death. He discovers the harsh reality of an afterlife. The dimension has shaped itself in the form of a high school. It is designed to shelter people who died unwanted deaths.
The school’s residents feel like they have been wronged by God and decide to form the Afterlife Battlefield, which is a group of rebels against the god-like student council president named Kanade “Angel” Tachibana. The group’s Yuri Nakamura takes Otanoshi into their fight against the president.
