Dororo is a Japanese manga series that made its first appearance back in 1967. It was created by a very well-known mangaka Osamu Tezuka. The very author that gave the other super hit “Astro Boy”. However, the anime adaption of Dororo has quite a different character design, and that received equally positive feedback. The plot of the anime is set up in the historical Sengoku-era, where it follows the life of a young boy named Hyakkimaru and a girl named Dororo. 10. Sword of the Stranger

The anime is a film that was produced by the Bones studio and was released by Shochiku. Its story is written by Fumihiko Takayama and follows the life of a young boy named Kotaro, who is an orphan. The little boy is a target of a swordsman named Ming but stays in the protection of Nanashi. This anime film was released on 29th September 2007, and its run time is 102 minutes. The film is available in Japanese and Mandarin.

9. Samurai Champloo

Samurai Champloo is another samurai anime series on the list, just like others. It is an adventure, historical, and samurai concept anime series. The manga series was written by Masaru Gotsubo and was published by Kodawaka Shoten publications. Ani anime adaptation of the series was produced by Manglobe Studio under the direction of Shinichiro Watanabe. The protagonist of the series Fuu who worked as a waitress in a town and got molested by the son of the town’s perfect. Mugen arrives in the town, and Fuu asked for his protection which he accepts in exchange for food. Later Jin arrives in the town and kills the bodyguard of the prefect end up making a trio with Mugen and Fuu.

8. Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit

Moribito: Guardian of the spirit is a Japanese novel series that was published in July 1996. The novel was later adapted into a manga series that was written by Nahoko Uehashi and illustrated by Kamui Fujiwara. The manga was released on 12th March 2007 and was later adapted into an anime series that was produced by Production I.G. The plot of the series goes around the like of a spear wielder and bodyguard named Balsa. She pledged to atone for the eight deaths that happened in the past by protecting further eight more lives.

7. Inuyasha

Inuyasha is a very well know classic anime series that centers the adventure, fantasy, and romance concepts. The manga Inuyasha was created by Rumiko Takahashi and was published by Shogakukan publications. An anime adaptation of the manga was created that was released back in 2000 but is very popular to date. The series consists of 167 episodes centering around the protagonist Inuyasha. In modern-day Tokyo, there lies Kagome Higurashi, who one day gets transferred to a parallel world that seems to be in the past. Her adventures began in the new world while she interacted with people there and got into some action.

6. Mushishi

The plot of the series Mushishi is set up in an imaginary world that lies somewhat in between Edo and Meiji Periods. It keeps in the center a ubiquitous creature that is called Mushi. The creature often displays supernatural powers and belongs to other primitive species like fungi and bacteria. The main character of the series is Ginko, who employs himself as a Mushi master and travels from place to place to research Mushi. It was initially released as a manga series published by Kodansha publications. An anime adaptation of the manga was released on 23rd October 2005.

5. Afro Samurai

Afro Samurai is an action, period piece, and post-apocalyptic-based anime series. It was released as a manga series and was published by Self-funded doujinshi. The manga was serialized in Nou Nou Hau manga magazine, making its first appearance in November 1998. A very short anime adaptation of the manga was released with only five episodes that adapted the one whole volume. The plot of the series is set up in a feudal yet futuristic Japan where a person with the number one headband is the greatest warrior. The protagonist of the series, Afro, wears the headband of number 2 and kills a group of assassins, criminals and mercenaries, and a lot of other people.

4. Berserk

Berserk is a 2016 anime series based on the manga by Kentaro Miura that goes by the same name. It’s a reboot of the anime adaptation of the manga that was originally released in 1997. Berserk is directed by Shin Itagaki and was produced by Liden Films, GEMBA, and Millepensee studios. In the storyline of the series, the protagonist Guts, “Black Swordsman,” was once a wandering mercenary. Just like other series in the list, it is also set up back in ancient times. He, alongside the Band of the Hawk, fought against Griffith and, in the process, sacrificed his followers to become one the God’s Hands.

The plot of the series is also set up back in time, in a world where ‘Alchemy’ is a science that is largely practiced. However, to get something from this method, you have to sacrifice something of the same value. Asura is a Japanese anime film based on the manga by George Akiyama. The film is a dark drama, and you will get to see a protagonist who is not very good-looking. It was directed by Keiichi Sato and was produced by Yoshiyuki Ikezawa. The plot of the film is set up back in 15th century Japan where flood and drought were the most prominent natural disaster. It follows the struggles of a child who was abandoned by his mother, who was impoverished herself. Eighth years later, amidst all the calamity, he turned up as a cannibalistic beast. He is surviving wandering in the countryside along with an axe to hunt.

Young Black Jack is the last one on our list, also known as Yangu Burakku Jaaku. It was initially released as a Japanese manga series by Yoshiaki and illustrated by Yugo Okuma. The manga was published by Akita Shoten and was serialized in Young Champion manga magazine. It was released on 22nd November 2011. Later, it was adapted into an anime series that was released on 1st October 2015. Till 17th December 2015, its released a series of 12 episodes whose plot makes it similar to Dororo.

The plot of the series is set back in 1960 keeps Kuroo Hazama, a gifted medical student, in the center. He is a brilliant surgeon and attracts a lot of attention as he performs many difficult surgeries.
