50 Best Series Like Game of Thrones

The entertainment industry, no matter the place or country, isn’t any stranger to adaption. From J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter novels to Camille DeAngelis’s Bones & All, the act of seeing an author’s vision come to life on screen is just something else. Now, all adaptions are not always great. Some suffer from directors being unable to fully understand the source, and others just decide to ignore it.

Recently, The Last of Us released its first episode, and fans can’t get gushing over it. Although we know that this isn’t really a book adaption but rather a video-game one, it is nice to see the showrunners doing their best to give fans a true adaption. When Game of Thrones premiered on 17 April 2011, the reception was beyond comprehensible.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy series of novels – A Song of Ice and Fire, this show was going to topple the charts and become something of an iconic series. Before Game of Thrones, Martin’s novels were already famous worldwide, being read by millions. Even to this day, his fans are still eagerly waiting for the 74 years old author to finish the sixth book in the Song of Ice and Fire series – The Winds of Winter.

Showrunners David Benioff and D.B.Weiss were able to practically capture the true essence of Martin’s novels while also throwing in some creative choices. The intrigue, amazing storyline, and stellar performance from the cast made Game of Thrones the most influential television series in history.

There were no other shows like it, and it set a new ceiling for new shows to try to break. GOT ran for eight seasons. All great except for the last one. While people argue that the writing was starting to show its weakness since the sixth season, it was the finale that came with a massive backslash.

For the uninitiated, Game of Thrones is an epic fantasy serial drama taking place on two continents – Essos and Westeros. There are many characters in the story, each unique and hiding their own motives. Furthermore, the series doesn’t really have any defined “main” protagonist. Some argue that Jon Snow can be considered one, but then again, there are others suitable for that same title, too, i.e.,  Daenerys Targaryen, Arya, or Sansa.

Martin himself was inspired by the War of the Roses, something which you can feel when reading his novels. In a simpler sense, Game of Thrones is a family story. A family mixed with shades of incest. It is raw, grand, and, more than anything – enjoyable. Right now, HBO is going all in, making the GoT IP a larger media franchise like Disney’s Star Wars.

The current status of the Game of Thrones universe

Though Game of Thrones ended in 2019, it still continues to capture the interest of millions of people worldwide. With the release of the prequel series House of the Dragon in 2022, the journey towards building an on-screen Game of Thrones universe has begun. The Song of Ice and Fire series, upon which the Game of Thrones series was based, has five books in total. The last completed book in the series was titled A Dance with Dragons. 

Interestingly, the Game of Thrones television series crossed the point where “Dance” ended and built its own conclusion. With the end of the TV series, many fans who would love to see Martin’s version of the series are still waiting for his next book – The Winds of Winter. Though it has been almost 13 years since the release of Martin’s last book, fans are still waiting patiently for him to finish the next one. After “Winds”, the next book in Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series will be titled “A Dream of Spring.” The release date for this novel is even further away, with many wondering if Martin will even manage to finish writing the story in his lifetime. 

However, Martin has released a companion novel titled Fire and Blood. This novel delves into the history of House Targaryen from the time they entered Westeros. Fire and Blood also serves as the basis for the House of the Dargon series. Apart from this, HBO has also announced multiple upcoming series based in the land of Westeros. The first of these is titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”. This series has already begun production in 2024 and is based on Martin’s novella series “The Tales of Dunk and Egg.” These books follow the story of King Aegon V Targaryen as a young boy and his chance encounter with a hedge knight named Ser Duncan the Tall. 

Ser Duncan, or “Dunk”, would go on to become the Lord Commander of Aegon V’s Kingsguard. Besides this series, HBO is also developing an animated series based on the voyages of Lord Corlys Velaryon, The Sea Snake. Lord Corlys appears in House of the Dragon at the height of his power as an advisor to Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen. HBO also plans to adapt the story of the legendary figure Princess Nymeria in a series titled 10,000 Ships. Production on this series is yet to begin. As fans await The Winds of Winter (link here), the Game of Thrones universe expands with plenty of series to keep even the most loyal fans occupied.

A sequel series based on Jon Snow has already been announced, with Kit Harrington returning to play the role. House of Dragon, which serves as the prequel to GOT, is also getting its own prequel centered around Lord Corlys Velaryon. The network is also adapting Martin’s three novellas into a series called – The Tales of Dunk and Egg.

And lastly, there are two animated shows being developed based on the IP, one of which will center around the Yi Ti of Essos. Four years after the conclusion to the grand saga that was the GoT, the search for similar series like it goes on. And so we have compiled a list of the 50 best series like Game of Thrones which you will enjoy watching. 

House of Dragon

Let’s be honest! Game of Thrones Season 8 was like starving willingly for months and waiting to eat the most exquisite of foods. But rather than experiencing an orgasm of fantasy family murder, what we got was an assault of joy and love by two incompetent showrunners whose legacy will forever remain despised.

Game of Thrones defined the cultural zeitgeist, and then D&D tanked it with their writing. Expectations shattered and goodwill destroyed. And you can only imagine what fans were like when the prequel to the main series was announced by HBO.

Fans and critics were equally careful to limit their hype around this new show, all thanks to what they had experienced earlier. Thankfully, House of the Dragon was handled with love by its showrunners – Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik.

The series is set 200 years before the main events of Game of Thrones and focuses on House Targaryen’s downfall. Same as Game of Thrones, it’s based on George R.R. Martin’s book – Fire and Blood. And as with any typical Martin story, expect a ton of nudity, incest, complicated plots, and the good-old family murders.

House of the Dragon was the recipient of 2022’s Golden Globe got Best Television Series in Drama. Plus, the pre-production is going to start this year, with Season Two slated to come out early next year. Hype is, to say the least, massive.

Succession

One thing you can expect from Succession is cussing. A lot and lots of cursing. Brain Cox gives a wonderful performance here, even though the cast is all beyond talented. The series is a satirical tragicomedy following the life of the members of the Roy family.

An HBO production, it is created by Jesse Armstrong, who also co-created the hilarious British comedy Peep Show. The Roy family consisting of the patriarch – Logan Roy, and his children and wife, are as dysfunctional as a family can get. Everyone here is a backstabbing, uncaring and egotistical man-child looking for their survival and nothing else.

Succession is HBO’s one of most successful shows post-GOT, even bagging several accolades and nominations. The network has also renewed it for another season, so you can binge-watch the series if you already haven’t done so.

Spartacus

Roman history fans, here’s a series you will like. Spartacus was made by director Sam Raimi of the Spiderman and Evil Dead fame, along with Steven S. DeKnight. American cable network Starz produced the series, which also went on to create other related series to the franchise – Spartacus: God of the Arena.

A major reason why this was done so was due to the fact that Andy Whitfield, who was cast as its lead character – Spartacus, had complications with his health. The actor did recover, but his illness came back, resulting in his passing on 11 September 2011. The plot of Spartacus is centered on Spartacus himself. Responsible for the Roman slave rebellion, the show tries to detail his life before and what led up to that event.

Foundation

To be honest, almost everyone was skeptical of Apple’s foray into the streaming business. Jumping into a market already saturated with a myriad of other options is not always a sound business decision. But it seemed like Apple knew what they were doing and what kind of content to produce.

Foundation is based on Isaac Asimov’s sci-fi book series of the same name. A grand space drama through and through, it’s a series comparable to the likes of Star Wars and Star Trek in terms of scale. While there is certainly room for improvement for the Apple TV+ show, it does a good enough job to hook the audiences in.

 

The show is helmed by Josh Friedman of the recent Avatar: Way of Water fame and famous video-game and superhero movies writer David S. Goyer as its showrunner. The plot of the story revolves around a large cast of characters, each in one way or another affected by the Emperor and his Galactic Empire.

His Dark Materials

Our fifth inclusion to the list is adapted from a trilogy of the same name, written by English author – Sir Philip Nicholas Outram Pullman. Made for BBC One in the United Kingdom and HBO in the United States, it’s written by Jack Thorne.

So far, it has received three seasons, all highly praised by critics and loved by the fans of the IP. His Dark Materials did receive a feature film adaption in 2007 called The Golden Compass. But it wasn’t able to perform as well as the executives had hoped. This series acts as a television reboot of that.

The story focuses on Lyra Belacqua, who lives in a similar world to us, just more magical. In her world, everyone’s souls have a physical body that takes the form of animals and are called daemons. The main conflict of His Dark Materials happens when Lyra’s friends go missing and, in her search, she discovers something more grand and cosmic.

The Witcher

Even if you are not familiar with The Witcher IP as a whole, the chaotic drama around Henry Cavill and the showrunners must have hit your notification bells on social media. Cavill’s departure from the series has sparked lots of controversies, with a large number of fans boycotting the writers. Lian Hemsworth has been roped in to take the British actor’s place after Cavill gives his last performance in Season 3.

The series itself is based on Polish fantasy writer Andrzej Sapkowski’s series of books. While the books were fairly popular, it was CD Projekt Red’s adaption of the setting into the video game trilogy – The Witcher which put the IP where it is today. No debates there. None.

However, Andrzej may like to say that his books were always more famous, it’s no doubt that without the release of The Witcher 3, his IP would have remained obscure. Like the man even went on to sue CDPR when he noticed the enormous success of the video games.

This was done after he had sold the rights to the Polish video game studio. Seeing the large and loyal fanbase around the IP, Netflix ordered a series based on it. Henry Cavill starred as Geralt of Rivia, a primary protagonist of the series, along with Freya Allan as Crown Princess Cirilla Fiona Elen Riannon. We follow Geralt, a “Witcher,” on his journey to save the Cintrian Princess from being captured by the invading Nilfgaardian empire.

The reception around the first season was great. Critics praised Cavill’s acting along with his natural flow of relationship with the traveling bard, Jaskier. Fans were happy, too, with this adaption. However, writing cracks would start to show from Season 2, which was criticized due to its heavy deviation from the source material. The Witcher remains an enjoyable watch if you are willing to give some slack to the writing.

Raised by Wolves

Seems like HBO has almost all the good shows on this list. And Raised by Wolves comes too under that umbrella. The series is an original show created by Aaron Guzikowski and was launched on the streaming service HBO Max. Raised by Wolves is a sci-fi drama centering around a pair of Androids known as Mother and Father.

Following the destruction of the earth after a war, these two are given orders to save humanity by raising children on a planet known as Kepler-22b. Reception around the series has been pretty good, with reviewers praising the story and the acting of the cast. Sadly, the show became a victim of the cancellation guillotine after two good seasons.

Westworld

Oh, how the mighty have fallen!! Westworld was once HBO’s highest-watched show, its story praised by everyone for its intricacies and twists. Season One was, needless to say, one of the greatest seasons to ever grace modern television.

The HBO show was based on Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name. Westworld aired on 2 October 2016 and went on to receive a total of four seasons before HBO canceled it. Westworld takes place in an advanced futuristic amusement park where the rich are allowed to live their wildest of dreams on androids, with no repercussions.

Shadow and Bone

The genre of fantasy is seeing a massive rise in recent years thanks to authors like Brandon Sanderson and Leah Bardugo. While there is yet to be a series or film to be made on Sanderson’s Cosmere Universe, Bardugo, on the other hand, has already got her with Shadow and Bone.

Part of the Grishaverse, Shadow, and Bone is a Netflix series created by Eric Heisserer, who was the writer of the Academy Award-winning feature film Arrival. Besides adapting Bardugo’s stories, the show also adds its own original storylines. Now whether that is a bad or good thing is for fans to decide. So far, the reviews on the first season have been positive, which has also allowed Netflix to greenlit a second season.

Vikings

English screenwriter Michael Hirst wrote and created He’s All That Netflix: What is The Show All About? in 2013. Before shifting to the Amazon Prime Video camp, the series was under the Canadian network history. Yes, it is the same History channel that was responsible for abominations like Ancient Aliens and Pawn Stars.

Vikings, as you may have guessed by the not-so-subtle title, is about Vikings. Specifically, the series mainly focuses on Ragnar Lothbrok along with his descendants. Historical accuracy, like most other shows (although not all), is not of the top-notch.

Besides that, it has been highly praised for its story and the captivating cast of characters. Seeing the wide appreciation and love for the series, Netflix decided to join in on the fun and currently streams the sequel to it called – Vikings: Valhalla.

The Last Kingdom

Developed by Stephen Butchard and based on Bernard Cornwell’s historical novel series – The Saxon Stories, The Last Kingdom is a British historical drama television series. Stephen originally developed the series for BBC Two. However, later on, the show would migrate to Netflix, where it would remain for the remainder of its run.

The Last Kingdom tells the story of how England came into form with the invasion of the Danes. Uhtred of Bebbanburg is the main protagonist of both the books and series, played by German actor Alexander Dreymon. The series saw its end last year with a fifth season. A movie titled – Seven Kings Must Die also slated to come out sometime in the near future, closing this long and beautiful saga.

The Sandman

Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman series is one of the best books to date. And this is a man who has written other equally excellent books like Coraline and American Gods. Like George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road and 2020’s Sonic movie, The Sandman also suffered through a long developmental hell. Plans were being drawn since 1991 until Netflix got their hands on the project and gave the IP the go-ahead.

What made The Sandman so good was that the writer’s understood the source material. Gaiman himself was heavily involved in the production of the series, serving as both writer and an executive producer. The Sandman’s story revolves around its main character, Lord Morpheus. Played by British actor Tom Sturridge, Morpheus is also called Dream by others.

He rules over the realm of Dreaming and is one of the Endless siblings, including – Death, Desire, Delirium, Destiny, Despair, and Destruction. Netflix has already renewed the series for a second season. A spin-off is also in the talks, but right now, it hasn’t been completely confirmed.

The Lord of Rings: Rings of Power

Polarizing. This would be the one word to describe Amazon Prime’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. A series that is currently the most expensive show to be ever produced to date. Daddy Bezos has already allowed for a five-season run, totaling around a 1-billion-dollar cost. Enormous doesn’t even do justice to this.

Ambitious and grand, the plot follows several cast of characters, including Galadriel, Elrond, and Sauron. Judging by those three names, you may have already figured out that this story takes place long before the conflict we read about and saw in the Peter Jackson movies.

That stupid amount of budget promised high-grade visuals, and we got to see them. Even though it’s a show, every episode feels like a separate movie from a visual effect standpoint. The characterization of its characters leaves a lot to be desired. But if you are willing to forgo that, then it’s a good watch.

Rome

Honestly, this historical retelling of Rome was Game of Thrones before the inception of Game of Thrones. A prototype of sorts. It had a huge budget, a compelling narrative, and a talented team of writers and actors. As the name already suggests, Rome explores how several major events and characters transformed it from a Republic to an Empire.

Ironic since the Roman Senate was the one hell-bent on preserving the Republic, and it was their own actions that resulted in Rome becoming an Empire. Rome was a critical success upon the release of its first season in 2005.

The series also won seven Primetime Emmy Awards and four Emmy Awards. Alas! The bludgeoning cost of production of the series meant an early cancellation for it. And so what was once decided to be a five-season show had to just do with two.

Boardwalk Empire

If there is one series that deserves to be called a “proper” successor to the Sopranos, it’s Boardwalk Empire. The series may not have all that charm of David Chase’s crime drama show, but it is more than able to stand on its own and prove its worth.

Boardwalk Empire was created by Terence Winter, with HBO broadcasting this 2010 period crime drama. It’s based on a book of the same name authored by Nelson Johnson. In total, it ran for an impressive five seasons before airing its last episode on 26 October 2014.

Over the course of its original four-year run, it was honored with 2011’s Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Drama. Furthermore, it bagged twenty Primetime Emmy Awards and received the 2011 and 2012’s Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

That ensemble is especially deserving since every actor and actress in the series was amazing in their role. As said earlier, it’s a period of crime drama taking place during the American Prohibition era. Watch this. You won’t regret your decision.

Peaky Blinders

From Cunk on Britain to The Great British Bake Off, the land of fish and chips is no stranger to making enjoyable shows. Our sixteenth recommendation – Peaky Blinders is a British show too. An amazing one at that.

Sporting a large ensemble cast including Cillian Murphy, Sam Neill, Thomas Hardy, Paul Anderson, and so many more, Peaky Blinders is a sort of historical crime drama like Boardwalk Empire. And just like it, the series also mainly centers around one man – Tommy Shelby.

Peaky Blinders is often counted in the list of modern influential television series to ever come out in recent years. It ended its run with a sixth season last year. Although Steven Knight, the series creator, has confirmed the production of a film that will enter its filming stage this year.

Into the Badlands

Everybody likes to clown on networks for canceling shows willy-nilly. This is justified in most cases where the show itself is great, but the execs, for some reason, decide to through under the chopping block. There’s a whole other graveyard of such shows whose potential was cut short by a company. Some are even on this list. The case of Into the Badlands is different, however.

AMC didn’t really have any choice but to cut short their losses and run, evidenced by the poor viewership and rating of the series after the first season. It went from amassing 6.39 viewers in the first episode to getting a meager 0.46 million in its last episode. Usually, that viewer number is reversed for popular shows.  

Set in a distant post-apocalyptic future where feudalism is rocking hard, and weapons like guns are not, Into the Badlands follows the journey of a skilled fighter known as Sunny. He serves Quinn, an influential baron, as his regent and is a loyal follower of him. But when he meets a young boy named MK, who holds some kind of mysterious power, everything in Sunny’s life goes haywire.

Badlands was only able to survive till its third season, after which AMC closed shop due to the aforementioned reasons. This time AMC was not in the wrong. The writing was dogshit, to put it bluntly. Even the great martial art action sequences were unable to pull in viewers.

Marco Polo

The rise of Netflix was meant to bring change. But out of their own pure stupidity, they have now become what they sought to replace. The streaming platform was supposed to be the home of new and innovative series and movies. But the sheer amount of carelessness they showed with canceling shows willy-nilly has turned them into a joke.

Marco Polo was among the list of shows Netflix canceled that had a significant amount of potential to achieve more. Frankly, it was miles better than the number of monthly teen dramas Netflix started sprouting later.

Premiering in 2014, it showed Venetian merchant and explorer’s years in the court of Khagan, Kublai Khan. Lorenzo Richelmy starred as Marco Polo, along with Benedict Wong as Kublai Khan. The series only lasted for two seasons before Netflix canceled it, citing budgetary issues.

Medici

Fans of the European renaissance period will have a fun time with this Italian historical drama. Created by Nicholas Meyer and Frank Spotnitz, the series ran from 2016 to 2019 on Rai 1 for a total of three seasons.

Medici mainly centers around the influential Italian Medici family, who were a big part of the Renaissance era. It explores the major events around the family and how they managed to remain relevant for so long. Coming to the topic of historical accuracy, don’t expect it to do much. Unlike Rome, the series is very lenient with taking liberties to suit its narrative.

Black Sails

Too many stories of kings and merchants, right? Let’s turn our attention to something different. Airing its first episode on 25 January 2014, Black Sails is a historical period drama action-adventure television series. It was created by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine and served as a prequel to Treasure Island.

Black Sails originally ran on the American television network Starz from 2014 to 2017. The series was unable to gather much attention when it was on the air, but as the years passed by, more and more viewers began to appreciate this pirate show.

The Wheel of Time

Another series is currently going through the same writing problem as Netflix’s The Witcher. Based on legendary fantasy writer Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series of high fantasy novels, it currently has one season, but Amazon has already greenlit a third season too.

The beautiful Rosamund Pike stars as Moiraine Damodred, along with Zoe Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara and Daniel Henney, donning the role of Moiraine’s Warder, al’Lan Mandragoran. The first season follows Moiraine as she looks to find an individual who will shape the fate of the world, for better or for worse.

Outlander

A Starz production, Outlander is created by Ronald D. Moore of the Battlestar Galactica (2004) fame. Based on Diana Gabaldon’s novel of the same name, the series first aired on 9 August 2014. Since then, it has been running for about nine years.

Outlander’s story focuses on the character of Claire Randall, who unknowingly travels back in time to the year 1743. There she meets a man named Jamie Fraser and promptly falls in love with him. But all is not well, as he realizes that Fraser is part of the Jacobites, who are bound to lose.

The Borgias

Now we know what you might be thinking. This list really has a lot of historical dramas. Well, you are right about that. But what can we do when all these are so good, no matter the language or year? Like our previously mentioned series Medici, The Borgias also depicts the Borgia family of Italy’s Renaissance era.

While the Medici weren’t so innocent of violence, the Borgia were simply just on another level. The bitter feud between the House of Medici and the House of Borgia was an important part of Italian or the larger European history in general.

And same as the television series Medici, The Borgias tells the story of how the House of Borgia came into prominence, especially their influence in the papacy. Sadly, Neil Jordan, the series creator, wasn’t able to finish his four-season planned story as Showtime canceled it, citing developmental costs.

Britannia

The main conflict of the story takes place during the second Roman invasion of Britain after Julius Caesar himself had failed to do so ninety years prior. This time the Romans aren’t going back without achieving their task, no matter the consequences or the price they would have to pay.

However, the defenders to are determined to resist once again. One thing you should remember before going all in the series is not to expect a whole lot of historical accuracy in there. Britannia is a historical fantasy adventure drama. And that fantasy label is a major part of the show. Now, if you are comfortable with all this, there’s no stopping you.

This Apple TV+ sci-fi drama was created by British screenwriter Steven Knight, who is also one of the executive producers of the show. Apple greenlit the series for a single-season run which aired from 1 November 2019 to 6 December 2019. Later on, seeing the performance of the show and the good critical reception, it was renewed for a second season. She would go into production for one more season before ending its story.

The title itself is very much revealing that the main theme of the story is taking place in a distant future. The series follows the story of twins who are born with the ability to sight. Everyone else is deprived of such power and thus has adapted themselves to it. But a powerful queen is looking for those with sight as she desires nothing but their death.

Attack on Titan

Attack on Titan’s manga ending was “something” else. That ending divided the fanbase, with debates and discussions still running around about it. Some think that Isayama did a good job with it, while fans in the other camp say that the ending was a disservice to their love and loyalty for the series.

Manga readers already know what’s coming, and they have made their peace with it. Now, it will be anime watchers who will get to decide sometime later this year. MAPPA is on full-on fire right now. The studio finished Chainsaw Man this month, receiving high praise for its action, visuals, and wacky storyline.

Tatsuki Fujimoto’s Chainsaw Man was already a heavy hitter in the manga sphere and was the most heavily anticipated series of all time. And MAPPA didn’t disappoint. Everything is not over for the studio, however. Attack on Titan Final Season Part 3 is set to release this year and will be divided into two courses. Eren’s journey will finally come to an end, and so will ours with this series.

In case you are unfamiliar with the premise of Attack on Titan, the story takes place in a world where mankind has been living under the protection of three giant walls which protect them from the monsters known as Titans.

These titans look like humans, too but function more like animals with minimal intelligence. But there’s more to them and the world. Something which you will be able to find once you watch the series.

The Boys

Come on! We all know this one was going to come on this list. As Netflix continues to cut shows right and left, Amazon Prime Video is trying to do the opposite. Daddy Bezo’s streaming service is producing some of the best shows right now, not only for English audiences but for regional audiences too.

The Boys is one of the best shows to ever come out from Prime Video, along with the likes of Reacher, The Expanse (we know it wasn’t on Prime first), Fleabag, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. The show is an adaption of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic book. And yes! It also has the same name.

Satirizing the superhero genre, The Boys takes place in a world where Superheroes are real. Just not in the “real” real sense. Rather they are made using a serum. And these supes are not some justice-loving people protecting people. They are racist (some, not all), egotistical beyond everything, and uncaring.

Billy Butcher and his crew don’t like these self-serving supes and are on a mission to wipe them all out. And they are not ones to shy away from getting their hands dirty. The success of the series has allowed Amazon to give the go-ahead for a spin-off titled – Gen V. It will air alongside the fourth season of The Boys.

Severance

Apple is trying hard to put out great shows, and so far, the streaming service has done an amazing job at it. Original shows and movies like Pachinko, For All Mankind, See, and Servant. Our twenty-eight numbered series is also an Apple TV original created by Dan Erickson.

Severance is directed by two people – Aoife McArdle and Ben Stiller of Tropic Thunder and Zoolander fame. Reviews of the show have been overwhelmingly positive, with it even winning the 2022 Primetime Emmy Award for Main Title Design and Original Dramatic Score. Apple has already renewed it for another season, so buckle up.

The main story of Severance follows Mark, played by Adam Scott from Parks and Rec, who volunteers to become part of a program that will separate his memories. This program, known as separate, allows an individual to “severe” their work and outside memories. Everything is fine at first, as is with all things sinister. And so Mark starts to discover things he isn’t supposed to know.

Battlestar Galactica

The bears beat Battlestar Galactica!! BSG, or Battlestar Galactica, is the 2004 military sci-fi space opera developed by Ronald D. Moore. The series itself is related to the 1978 television show of the same name. Battlestar Galactica is often quoted as one of the most television dramas of all time. Its influence spans media, including video and board games.

Over the course of its original run, it was the recipient of several awards, such as the Peabody Award, Emmy Award, Saturn Award, and more. Just like other space operas, BSG’s story spans worlds. However, most of the storylines focus mainly on the military ship – Battlestar Galactica and its crew. The series was followed by a prequel titled Caprica.

The Spanish Princess

Created by Emma Frost and Matthew Graham, The Spanish Princess is adapted from Philipa Gregory’s (a name you will encounter again) two novels – The King’s Curse and The Constant Princess. American television network Starz produced the series and announced that it would be a limited series before its airing.

The Spanish Princess is a historical period drama detailing the life of King Henry VIII’s first wife, Catherine of Aragon. Reception around the series was mixed, to say the least. Internationally, especially in Spain, where Catherine was from, the series was heavily criticized for producing such an inaccurate representation of the subject it was portraying.

American Gods

Besides Alan Moore, the one author that can be compared to his caliber is certainly Neil Gaiman. In fact, these two are good friends, and Neil even helped Moore in writing Watchmen. Gaiman’s own resume is more than stellar with works like Good Omens, Coraline, Sandman, and of course, American Gods.

The adaption was developed by Bryan Fuller of Hannibal fame and Michael Green, who was a screenwriter for Blade Runner 2049. Initially, HBO was invested in doing the adaption but had to back out after they weren’t satisfied with the given scripts. Eventually, Starz picked up the series.

The premise of American Gods is pretty much self-explanatory. It takes place in America, where the Old Gods are uniting to fight against the New Gods. The overall reception of the series was good. Not great, however. Plans for the fourth season were on the tables, but Starz went on to cancel after a three-season run.

The Tudors

Created by the same Michael Hirst behind Vikings, The Tudors is a historical drama starring Sam Neil, Henry Cavill, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and others. It was made for the American cable network Showtime and reportedly was their highest-rated show at the time of its airing.

Don’t go into this show expecting to see the history and rise of the Tudor dynasty. Why do that when you can just make a show on probably one of the most famous and influential(for better or worse) kings in the history of England – King Henry VIII? The man responsible for the separation of the Church of England and the Papacy just because he could marry for the second time.

And then one more time. And again. And another time again. All in all, a total of six times. Now that you know a little bit about King Henry VIII and his marriage adventures, expect all this from the show. Also, leave any notion of historical accuracy as The Tudors is an entertainment soap opera first and foremost.

Deadwood

Westerns are a rare sight when it comes to finding good television series. Now movies, on the other hand, are completely opposite. This is why HBO’s Deadwood has remained the go-to Western television series for fans of the genre.

Created by David Milch, Deadwood features a talented ensemble cast with Timothy Olyphant and Ian McShane donning the central role of Seth Bullock and Al Swearengen. As it’s a western period drama, we follow the lives of the people populating the town of Deadwood in South Dakota.

It ran for three seasons and won numerous accolades, including eight Emmys and one Golden Globe. HBO also developed a movie around the series called Deadwood: The Movie, which takes place ten years later after the main events of the third season.

 The Wire

There are lots of series and movies that get to bask in the glory of their influence only after they have finished their run or stopped airing. John Carpenter’s 1982 sci-fi horror, The Thing was a box-office bomb upon its release.

But later on, it went on to garner a cult-following status once it was available on home media. Something similar happened with this thirty-fourth series on our list. During its original run from 2002 to 2008, The Wire wasn’t a recipient of any Emmy or any other major awards.

However, today it is constantly cited as the greatest television series to ever come out. HBO let the series run for five seasons. This also led it to feature a large cast ranging from Idris Elba to Dominic West. The show deals with a lot of heavy themes, with each season focusing on one theme.

Babylon 5

Space operas have been a long staple of the sci-fi genre. From books to movies, they continue to flourish even today. Guess the idea of a grand sci-fi adventure, drama, and war spanning galaxies and planets attracts a large crowd.

In television, the release of Star Trek was what popularised the space opera subgenre in the US. While there were a number of other shows which had done so many years earlier, it was Star Trek that was the most influential of them all.

Created by J. Michael Straczynski, Babylonia 5 is an American space opera that ran for five seasons from 1933 to 1998. Warner Bros. was responsible for the production of the series, which allowed Straczynski to run the show after seeing the viewership numbers and good ratings.

Babylon 5’s premise revolves around the occupants of the eponymous space station. Unlike most shows at the time, it followed arcs and conflicts over multiple episodes and seasons. Straczynski is producing a reboot of the show, which is set to air on CW. However, a proper release date is yet to be announced.

The White Queen

This one is also based on a book, notably Philippa Gregory’s three-book novel series – The Cousins’ War. Comprising of The White Queen, The Red Queen, and The Kingmaker’s Daughter, her historical novels were then later adapted into a television series produced by BBC One.

The White Queen details the influence of three women who had major involvement in the fate of England. Unlike other shows on this list, this one is a miniseries. After its conclusion, it was followed by two other shows – The White Princess and The Spanish Princess. These two were also based on Gregory’s novel.

The Great

Nicholas Hoult has been on a roll lately. The Menu starring Ralph Fieness, Anya Taylor-Joy, and him, was such an entertaining movie to watch from beginning to end. And with Renfield releasing this year with Nicolas Cage as Dracula, you know we are in for a fun ride.

It’s not only in movies where Hoult shows his impressive acting chops. His role as Tsar Peter III of Russia in Hulu’s The Great is so so good. Charming, beautiful, and depraved, his performance here needs a watch. Of course, it isn’t only Hoult that makes The Great such a good show. His acting is equally complemented by the gorgeous Elle Fanning’s own.

The Great, in essence, is a satirical retelling of how Catherine the Great of Russia came into power and the struggles she faced, including her husband. On Rotten Tomatoes, Season 1 possesses an 88% approval rating out of a total of 84 reviews. Season Two exceeded expectations, earning 100% based on a total of 25 reviews.

Andor

Let’s not beat around the bush here. Thanks to the big brains at Disney, Star Wars suffered a massive creative loss. The sequels are some of the worst things Star Wars has gotten ever since the big mouse got hold of it. This is not to say that Star Wars before Disney was devoid of anything bad.

The prequels were, to say the least, bad. Years later, however, fans have somewhat accepted its bad quality and effectively turned the whole trilogy into a meme bank. Sequels, on the other hand, are still a fresh wound, and it would take a long amount of time for fans to embrace them.

When Andor was announced by Disney, fans were not entirely sold on the show. While Rouge One was a great Star Wars film, basing a whole show on a fairly unknown character was a risky move. A move that paid off in the last.

Andor centers around the eponymous Rebel Spy, who made his debut in 2016’s Rouge One. It’s a prequel before the events of the film. Mexican heartthrob Diego Luna comes back to play the role of Andor once again, and the same as before gives a mind-blowing performance. Season One has been cited as the best Disney live-action show since The Mandalorian’s first season itself. And a second season is already in the works.

Merlin

BBC’s Merlin or The Adventures of Merlin retells the Arthurian legends of King Author and the Round Table from Merlin’s perspective. As implied by the name, it heavily focuses on the powerful wizard who helped King Arthur ascend the throne of Britain. (Although if you ask Dennis, “strange woman lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.”)

Developed by Julian Murphy, Johnny Capps, Jake Michie, and Julian Jones, Merlin was a critical success going on for a five-season run. The series noted good numbers throughout its airing years, going from 6.32 million average viewers in Season 1 to 7.13 million average viewers during its last season.

The Serpent Queen

If you still want more Medici, watch The Serpent Queen. It’s also based on a book called – Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda. British actress Samantha Morton plays the role of Queen Catherine.

The Serpent Queen is a fairly new television series, starting its run only on 11 September of last year. Critical reception has been very good, with it receiving 100% on Rotten Tomatoes out of a total of nineteen critic reviews. Starz has already renewed it for a second season.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

From the outside, Mecha animes always look like a fun light, hearted ride. Just giant cool mechs are fighting each other and doing amazing stunts. While all this is true, the mecha genre is riddled with heavy themes such as depression, racism, class struggle, and more. Take a look at Neon Genesis Evangelion, and you will realize how true that statement is.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is an anime original made by Studio Sunrise. Yes, these are the same people behind Gundam and Cowboy Bebop! Goro Taniguchi and Ichiro Okouchi served as director and writer, respectively, while the all-female manga artist group Clamp did the character designs.

The anime takes place in an alternate timeline where the world is subject to three major powers – Europa United, the Chinese Federation, and Holy Britannian Empire. Lelouch Lamperouge lives in the country of Japan, which is under the occupation of the Britannian Empire.

Unknown to many, he is also a prince of the said empire but has vowed to wipe it out for the sake of his mother and sister. Gaining the power to command people known as Geass, he will face great trials and tribulations along his mission to kill his father.

Camelot

While Merlin focuses on Merlin’s perspective and his mission, Camelot is a much more straightforward series that centers around the Arthurian legends. Michael Hirst and Chris Chibnall were responsible for the development of the show and also served as executive producers.

Camelot doesn’t try to deviate much from the legends, following the tried and true storylines. Starz, the network Camelot was running on, moved the show to the chopping block after only one season due to conflicts with some of the cast’s schedules.

Versailles

Versailles is a historical drama television series following the events of King Louis XIV’s reign and the construction of the famous Palace of Versailles. A turning point for the country of France, it recounts the Sun King’s journey to becoming the most powerful monarch in Europe at his time.

Originally airing on the French network Canal+, Versailles ran from 2015 to 2018 for a total of three seasons. It’s even Frances’s one of the most expensive shows, with a budget totaling around 30 million euros only for its first seasons.

Lost

Ah!! The mystery box. No one can separate JJ from him and his beloved mystery box. When it comes to disappointing endings, GoT takes the cake. But Lost and Dexter also eat that cake too. Created by J.J. Abrams, Jeffrey Lieber, and Damon Lindelof, the show was a mish-mash of sci-fi, mystery, drama, supernatural fiction, and adventure.

At the time of its airing, Lost was one of if not the most-watched television series. Ratings were frequently high for the show, as they continued to rack in awards and appreciation. On Rotten Tomatoes, the only season with less than a 70% rating is its last season, coming at about 68%. Compared to that, it hit peak status in Season 2, as evidenced by the 100% rating.

The whole story of Lost takes place on an island after passengers of an airplane find themselves stranded. But the island is not as normal as it looks from a glimpse. Simply saying, it is mysterious and dangerous. And the survivors come armed with their own agenda. Soon, chaos takes hold of them.

The Sopranos

When Sopranos started airing in 1999, nobody knew that it would go on to redefine modern television. Not the critics, the actors, and certainly not its creator – David Chase. HBO, the one constant network on this list, also aired Sopranos.

The first season saw it’s released on 10 January 1999 until 4 April 1999. Ratings of the show were always bouncing from good to great, all thanks to Chase’s involvement with the show and cast.

The Sopranos centers around the protagonist of the series – Tony Soprano. Now, Tony may be the protagonist, but at best, he’s a grey character. One thing you should take by heart when watching this series is don’t ever expect to find the “good” guy here. In a sense, it’s like Warhammer 40k. Everybody’s bad. There are just different levels of bad here.

Three Kingdoms

From a guy claiming to be Jesus’s brother and starting a major war that led to the death of thirty million people to a battle that resulted in thirty-thousand civilians cannibalized, Chinese history is full of bonkers stuff. The Three Kingdoms period is even more bonkers than anything. It is also China’s most famous period of history, spanning generations.

The period itself was popularised by Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms novel. It details everything during the Three Kingdoms period and heavily centers around three states – Shu Han, Eastern Wu, and Cao Wei.

Released in 2010, Three Kingdoms is an adaption of that book. Although the series has been criticized heavily for steering away from the source material to a degree, it was a commercial and critical success.

The 100

CW is not particularly known for producing the greatest of shows. The network has an unfortunate history of having good shows become sub-par by each season. Arrow and Flash were regarded as the best in the network’s history of shows, but they, too, suffered from the same problem.

The 100 was a victim of the same fate. Based on Kass Morgan’s YA novel of the same name, it was created by Jason Rothenberg. And if you are even remotely familiar with the genre that is young adult, you know two things are certain no matter the medium of storytelling – Post Apocalyptic and Teenagers.

One hundred criminal teenagers land on an unknown Earth after the planet was destroyed following a nuclear apocalypse. The fortunate ones were able to survive by living on a space station called Ark, while some were able to survive on earth by other methods. As the living conditions worsen at the Ark due to deteriorating life-support systems, those hundred are sent to evaluate the conditions on the planet they once called home.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

From iCarly and Drake & Josh to SpongeBob SquarePants, Nickelodeon was one of the best channels out there. It was responsible for making so many kids happy and even today continues to do the same. Although over the years, the network has been the subject of a lot of controversies, especially the allegations against Dan Schneider.

Avatar: The Last Airbender is an American animated action-adventure fantasy series. It was created by Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko for the network after successfully convincing then-Vice-President Eric Coleman. The show takes inspiration from different cultures, such as the Arctic, South Asia, South East Asia, and Chinese. Something you can clearly notice by looking at its world and cultures.

It’s set in a world where individuals are able to manipulate one of four major elements – Fire, Water, Air, and Earth. Furthermore, with the help of a technique called Bending, people can utilize this to do a myriad of tasks, notably among all combat.

While people can only control one single element, there exists one individual who can master all four, known as Avatar. Aang is the current Avatar, but he is inexperienced. However, he will have to prepare himself along with his friends as the threat of an invasion looms over him.

ATLA’s legacy continues to shine even so many years after its conclusion. Today, it has turned into a media franchise with one animated sequel and a live-action remake in the works, which Netflix is producing. (We don’t talk about that M. Night Shyamalan movie.)

The Crown

There’s just something about watching rich people bickering and trying to undermine each other. Succession is a prime example of that. Meanwhile, Netflix’s The Crown is just a more elegant version of that. Except for less swearing and being based on real people.

Created by Peter Morgan, The Crown details the life of Britain’s royal family, from the marriage of Queen Elizabeth II to her rule in the twenty-first century. A tale filled with heartbreaks, death, and ego suiting a royal.

Claire Foy and Olivia Coleman, who both played the role of Queen Elizabeth II, were praised for their performances by critics and fans alike. Season 5 of the series aired back in November of last year, with Elizabeth Debicki joining the cast as Princess Diana. Netflix will end the show with its sixth season. However, there are talks going on about a possible prequel to the series.

The Expanse

Even if you are not particularly a fan of sci-fi, give The Expanse a chance. You will not regret watching this. The Expanse is basically Game of Thrones in space. While it may not be as graphic and incestuous as GOT, it sure has all the qualities which made it so influential.

From political intrigue to season-spanning storylines, The Expanse delivers a one-of-a-kind experience. Plus, unlike Game of Thrones, the writing here is solid each season, and the showrunners didn’t butcher the last season. Same as Game of Thrones, Expanse was too adapted from a series of novels written by James S.A. Corey.

That name is a pen name for the writer duo- Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck. Fun fact, Ty Franck was George R.R. Martin’s personal assistant before he went on to collaborate with Abraham. Expanse follows the four survivors of the space freighter, Canterbury – James Holden, Alex Kamal, Naomi Nagata, and Amos Burton.

These four are our “main” protagonists and will eventually see another individual become a part of their crew. Together these people fly the ‘legally’ salvaged Martian gunship – Rocinante. Over the six seasons of the series, Rocinante and her crew are involved in a multitude of dangerous battles and missions.

Secrets are uncovered, worlds are discovered, and lessons are learned. What makes The Expanse, besides all of its carefully crafted stories and characters, is its science. The series doesn’t try to go hard on the futuristic tech but rather mostly confines itself to plausible techs and advancements mankind may be able to achieve.
