Ms. Marvel Season 1 Episode 1 kicks off the show by taking it slow to introduce us to Kamala Khan and her world. Marvel Cinematic Universe has continued to be pretty different for a while with the introduction of characters like Moon Knight and movies such as Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness. Ms. Marvel over here takes a break from the intensity to bring us a light-hearted teenage superhero tale.
Taking a look at the same, here we are breaking down some of the major events of Ms. Marvel’s very first episode. From meeting Kamala Khan and her family to her discovering a mysterious bangle, then watching her rebel go to a superhero event, to watching her receive superpowers. Here is everything that went down in Ms. Marvel Episode 1.
Ms. Marvel Season 1 Episode 1 Recap
Ms. Marvel Season 1 Episode 1 introduces us to the character of Kamala Khan and her family. We see her fangirling over the Avengers, but more importantly towards Captain Marvel as she retells the events of Avengers: Endgame. She has her own YouTube channel where she tells her own stories about the heroes.
Apart from that, she is looking forward to an event called AvengerCon. She wants to participate in a Captain Marvel cosplay competition. The only bump in her road is her family, who may not allow her. Kamala’s best friend Bruno asks her to be bold and ask her parents about it.
While helping out her mother, Kamala comes across a bangle that may have belonged to her Nani. Kamala’s mother takes note of it and tries to keep Kamala away from the bangle, stating that it’s junk. Eventually, she does ask her parents’ permission to go to AvengerCon. As she predicted, they didn’t agree to it, believing it was not good for her.
Kamala’s brother Aamir pushed Kamala’s parents a bit. That’s when they agreed to let her go but on one condition. Kamala’s father would tag along. They both will dress up as Hulks, with Kamala wearing a salwar-kameez. Kamala claimed it was humiliating for her to go with her father, which ended up upsetting her parents. They decided they won’t let her go wearing skimpy outfits like the other girls.
Bruno later comforted Kamala. She eventually figured out a plan to visit AvengerCon without her parents finding out about it. With Bruno’s AI in position at Kamala’s house, it was possible. So Kamala prepared herself with her costume and her Nani’s bangle to connect with her Pakistani Heritage.
After a lot of struggle, Bruno and Kamala made it to the AvengerCon. Upon putting on the bangle, Kamala was transported to a different dimension before being brought back. During the competition, she ends up unlocking powers that see her extending her hands using what looks like cosmic powers.
Although Kamala causes a massacre at the event, she ends up saving her friend Zoe who also participated in the completion. The episode closes with Kamala’s mother finding out about Kamala escaping. She is disappointed, but on Kamala’s side, she is pretty excited, believing she might have become a superhero.
Ms. Marvel Season 1 Episode 1 Review
Ms. Marvel Season 1 Episode 1 works as every superhero introductory episode would work. Typical superhero build-up. But that doesn’t mean Ms. Marvel’s first episode was lame. In fact, it was pretty comic book accurate and helped us understand the dynamics and the culture of her family. The culture part might not be completely accurate, but definitely close.
Apart from that, on the artistic side, Ms. Marvel has brought some of the best in-store. The opening of the show and all the animations that carry on during the episode. Well, they all work beautifully and give the show its own unique way of telling the story.
The show also works as a reflection of the real world with the world established in the MCU. Much like MCU, the real world is too obsessed with the whole MCU and DC superheroes thing. The show reflects the same with Kamala’s character as a teenager who is definitely obsessed with superheroes, especially Captain Marvel.
The show also grabs some of the pop culture references and gives it its own MCU touch. With Comic-con kind of becoming AvengerCon and stuff. Lastly, Ms. Marvel Episode 1 is yet to dive in more with a villain coming and everything. It is more or less like a teenage superhero story. The closest to it is probably Spider-Man: Homecoming.
So, as of now, the show may only continue to explore the powers of Ms. Marvel. Probably the origins of the bangle Kamala found. We believe they have a history more or less like the ten rings from Shang-Chi: The Legend Of Ten Rings or something like the Eternals.
Talking about villains, at this point, the show has only sowed seeds by introducing the officers that were present in Spider-Man: No Way Home as well. They saw a video from AvengerCon that sees Kamala using her powers, and we believe they are onto her.
