Margaery died in the episode, The Winds of Winter, aired on 26th June 2016. It was the 10th and final episode of Season 6. Miguel Sapochnik directed this episode. Let us take you through the circumstances leading to her death.
As a queen, Margaery won hearts. But, Tommen and Joffrey’s mother, Cersei (Lena Headey), did not like her. There are multiple reasons for that. Firstly, Margaery took away the opportunity of becoming a queen from Cersei.
She also broke royal protocols to spend time with commoners. When confronted, Joffrey took her wife’s side. That’s when Cersei realizes that the new queen is taking control of her son. Cersei was also upset when Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) married Margaery.
Margaery was much older than Tommen. Hence, she framed Margaery for hiding Loras’s homosexuality. But Cersei was also arrested for having sexual relations within her family. Loras (Finn Jones) had no hope of mercy, but Margaery motivated him.
She also convinced Olenna that her loyalties were with the House of Tyrell. During the trial, Loras accepts everything and gives up his title. Thus, Margaery becomes the official heir of Highgarden. But Cersei was missing from the event. This was enough to raise suspicion.
Margaery quickly detected foul play. She even tried to evacuate the Great Sept of Baelor, but nobody believed her. Eventually, a wildfire broke out that destroyed the building and the surroundings. This incident killed Margaery, her father, Loras, and everyone inside.
It was officially the end of the House of Tyrells. It was all planned by Cersei. Post his wife’s death, Tommen committed suicide. And Cersei took over the Iron Throne.
