The Banshees Of Inisherin Filming Locations
Inishmore (Inis Mór)
McDonagh spent much time visualizing the type of island he wanted for this movie. See, Inisherin isn’t a real place. The island is a fictional piece. But the place which was depicted as Inisherin were the Inishmore islands. McDonagh revealed that the Inishmore Islands in Galway Bay seemed perfect for the filming.
The Islands are home to a population of only 760. The stone walls and tiny stretches of land were shown in the movie. The island appears extremely calm and serene, thus providing a perfect contrast to the havoc going on in the lives of the two friends, Padraic and Coln.
The shooting also took place at Achill Island. The Inishmore islands are part of the greater Aran Islands. All these land pieces are located along Ireland’s west coast.
Pádraic and Coln’s Residence
The home of the two friends whose relationship is falling apart didn’t exist beforehand. The production team designed and built the home at a particular location. This place, known as the Gort Na gCapall, is on the Inishmore islands.
The makers built the home on the top of a tarp, avoiding direct contact with the ground below. Local artists were employed to ensure the originality of the home was preserved and could fit in with the Inishmore surroundings.
Dún Aonghasa, Inishmore
A hillfort was commonly seen in the background of Pádraic and Coln’s interactions. This landmark is also visible directly from their home. Dun Aonghasa isn’t a simple hillfort. It is a place that has existed for nearly 3000 years and is an important part of Ireland’s history. Martin, the movie’s director, and writer, also discovered this place.
Purteen Harbour, Achill Island
The movie shows a busy harbor that both friends frequent. You will find this harbor just along the southernmost coast of the Achill Islands. The Purteen Harbour isn’t as busy as shown in the film. Some additions, like the local store, were made to the harbor to make it look like a harbor of the bustling place.
Corrymore Lake, Croaghaun Mountain
Mrs. Mccormick is the old and amusing lady in the opening scene warning Padriac that death awaits one of them. Her residence is located near Corrymore Lake.
The makers wanted to find a secluded spot that could give off eerie vibes. The original plan was to keep her residence close to Pádraic and Coln’s house. Still, the director felt that taking her to a secluded area would help establish the character’s mysterious nature and identity.
Hence they finalized Corrymore Lake. The lake is on Croaghaun Mountain. One needs to do a brief trek to reach the place. Huge trees guard the area, and one can spot rich flora and fauna at this location.
