Silo is a novel written by Hugh Howey; this novel series started in 2011 with a short story by the name of Wool and is followed by some novels and three main novels that all needed to be written to understand the story and the flow of it completely.
The series was made by Graham Yost. It is doing pretty well with the audience right now; with three of its episode, there is only little we know about them, leaving a lot of scope for what could happen from here on. There is a good touch of science fiction and thriller along with dystopia that makes the series even more interesting to work through.
The cast for this show includes Rebecca Ferguson, the chief producer of the series, David Oyelowo, Harriet Walter, Rashida Jones, Geraldine James, Tim Robbins, and Lonnie Rynn, popularly known as Common. Rebecca is seen playing the role of Juliette Nichols, an engineer in The Silo who is the protagonist and can be seen trying to investigate what exactly is going on in The Silo, David Oyelowo is playing the role of sheriff of Silo, and he is seen married to Allison played by Rashida Jones who is playing an extremely important role in the series.
Allison is also seen to be suspicious of the government of silo and wants to understand the reason behind all the rules that everyone is supposed to abide by. Silo Episode 1 Ending Explained
Before getting to the ending, let’s look into the episodes and the plotline first. This show Silo, as mentioned, follows a dystopian theme with elements of sci-fi; basically, Earth is occupied by zombies, and there is only little place left for people to live, so the last few 10,000 survivors are staying in a silo.
The problem is the people living there have no recollection o how they reached this place and what exactly went down that they had to come here. Is it really true what is being told to them? That the upper surface of the Earth is captured and inhabited by the Zombies, and they need to stop asking questions while staying put like good children and listen to all that the government is saying because it is for their own good.
But being curious is a part of human nature, and getting killed because of it comes as a consequence for people who decide to let curiosity get the best of them. So, when a bunch of brave Silo citizens decides they want to know why they have been held captive in this hole of sorts that they do not know was created by who and why, they are found dead for trying to do so. This piques interest and creates a situation of fear in the hearts of many, and now everyone just needs answers!
During the first episode that is titled “Freedom Day,” we get the first glimpses of what living in Silo could look like. There are seen to be a lot of facilities available for the people living there, no kind of necessity is essentially pared, but the higher-ups have rules. Rules that only allowed them to have a certain lifestyle and nothing else.
The first episode starts with a scene where Holston, the Sheriff, is asking the officials to be let out of this place, the reason? It lies in the past. Going back two years, Holston and Allison, his wife, were allowed by the authorities to have a child together. Why the permission, you ask? Because well, the females in the Silo aren’t allowed to have children and have birth control put inside their bodies to prevent them from getting pregnant.
This was the third time they were trying to get pregnant, but then Allison is told by Gloria, the one who checks the fertility of women at Silo, that the officials do not want the women to get pregnant and that Allison still has birth control attached to her. This immensely confuses Allison, making doubts creep into her head. She is then approached by Michael, an IT Engineer who asks for Allison’s help fixing a computer; she is hesitant as it consists of information from before “The Rebellion”.
The Rebellion was basically the time when people from the Silo itself came together to rebel against the authorities and demanded to be let out. Which ended up being a failure, as they’re on something that happened that wiped both the computer and individual memory data completely.
She ends up helping him and seeing a glimpse of the outer world as it was, a lush green area and nothing like the deserted and dangerous plot that the authorities warned the people it was. This is making Allison question everything she knows about the outer world and also Silo. She informs her husband and tells him she’s going to go out. Holston tries to stop her, but she is dead set on doing this.
In Silo, you can go out of the “secure space” by vocally saying that you want to. But what happens when you go out, as can be seen on the camera screen, is people walking away and suddenly falling dead. This is what happened with Allison, too; she got out and cleaned the surface of the camera from the outside, showing that the outside was indeed a luscious green land. But then, suddenly collapses and dies.
Mayor Ruth and Holston are saddened to see that happen, but there is nothing really that they can do about it. Next, we see two years have passed, and Holston is investigating the murder of Michael. Well, as was expressed by Juliette Nichols to be as she does not believe George, her colleague, could have killed himself in such a way.
Silo Episode Two Ending Explained
The second episode is titled “Holston’s Pick”, in this episode, the first scenes include another person going out of the Silo, this time, Holston. But what happened that made him decide to go out is unknown, except what he tells Mayor Ruth being that he wants to be there for his wife. When he steps out, he can too see the greenery that surrounds the place, but he, too, falls down suddenly and dies. Before this, there is a sequence of events that follow through Juliette’s past memory. Juliette receives a handwritten note from George telling her that Georg has found what he was looking for.
But is then found dead; Michael was seen to have fallen 100 feet deep and to his death; how this happened is beyond people’s understanding as there were no known witnesses to the crime or event. Juliette is adamant about the opinion that George was killed, and then this news is propagated to Sheriff Holston, now the Sheriff has decided to go meet Juliette and ask her why she thinks it is a murder, and she goes on to show him the note that George left her and takes him to her and George’s hiding place.
She tells Holston that George was trading ancient items and would store them at this place. Juliette and George’s hiding place was basically an abandoned and secluded area, with an unmoving machine present there. While looking through George’s clues, they find the hard drive that George had shown Allison, and it also had Allison’s handwriting on it; this is when Juliette realizes that Holston is Allison’s husband. Holston also sees George’s watch on Juliette’s hand and assumes that the two of them share a romantic relationship.
After finding some clues, both of them argue as they try to find answers as to who could have killed Michael in this space and for what reason. Holston says he will investigate what happened and look into the hard drive, but then he never does meet Juliette after that, and the last she sees him is going out of the Silo.
The reason Holston decides to do this could be because he had now understood that the people and officials were trying to hide something and deceiving them, and he necessarily could not do anything about it, so he decided to do the next best thing, be with this wife, who now had a gaping hole in his chest without. But before leaving, he nominates Juliette to be his successor as a Sherrif.
Because maybe he believes Allison can do what he can’t. He said that she had lost a loved one just like he had and that he had the fire within her to understand what was going on in The Silo and would find the answers to the recurring questions in their mind, and she would avenge the death of both Allison and her partner George.
Silo Episode Three Ending Explained
The third episode of the series that came out just two days ago is titled “Machines”. This episode highlights the political structure and the possible dirty politics going on in The silo; the power dynamics are nothing when there are citizens and corrupt individuals who do not want to let go of control and want only their way with things. Throughout this episode, we see the suspense building up as there is tension as to whether Juliette will take up the position of the Sheriff or not. The episode starts with Juliette trying to find some more clues and evidence related to George’s death in their secret hiding space and the place he was found dead but in vain.
Then we see Mayor Ruth and Deputy Marnes as they try to interview different people to understand if Juliette is fit for the position or not; Ruth wants to do the right thing and let the successor be someone who Holston wanted it to be.
She and Marnes go to talk to Bernard, the head of the IT department, about Juliette, and to her surprise, he ends up bad-mouthing Juliette and calling her a thief and an absolutely unsuitable candidate for the position. He then goes on to suggest another individual, Paul Billings, as the next Sheriff. Bu the way he says it, it wasn’t of someone making a suggestion but a decision.
Mayor Ruth does not take his opinion into consideration and wants to do what Holston wants, but Billings and Bernard are extremely persuasive and, along with the Judicial department, try to push Mayor Ruth to make the decision of only choosing Billings.
Ruth is in the position of utmost authority, though, and will do whatever she thinks is right. Ruth makes a decision to even meet Juliette’s father about this matter, who is not able to help them a lot. But, Mayor does make a note of how Juliette comes from a family of doctors and lived a considerably luxurious life and left all of that to become an engineer.
While all of this is happening, Ruth and her team of engineers are trying to solve the problem of the generator that is not working properly. This is a time-sensitive issue, and something needs to be done about it immediately; otherwise, there would be consequences for the whole city, and it could even lead to an explosion destroying major parts of the Silo.
There are a lot of challenges that the crew faces while trying to fix the machine, but eventually are able to do so successfully. The whole situation was handled gracefully by Juliette, and she showed them all how she is a definite fit for the Sheriff’s position.
Eventually, Juliette did decide that she would take up the position of the sheriff after much contemplation, as when she was given Holston’s batch, she saw an extremely small craving on it that said ‘truth’. This made her see that Holston wanted her to uncover the truth, that what they saw on the drive was actually true, and that she had a chance of doing it all if she took up a position of power.
Things seem to be ending well, but then it takes a turn for the worst, as after selecting Juliette for the position of Sheriff, Mayor Ruth and Marines sit down in his apartment to have a drink. But then, while drinking wine, Ruth suddenly chokes o it and spits out blood. Marnes was inside the kitchen only to find Ruth in a near-death situation.
There can be lots of speculations that can be made about who did this to Ruth; there is a high chance that something was mixed in her food or her drink to harm or potentially kill her. As to who could have done it, the most obvious guess is Bernard or someone from the judicial team, who did not want Juliette to be the sheriff and were angered that Ruth did not listen to them and thus wanted to kill her off so that they can do what they want to.
