The period romance between a pirate with a scary reputation and a military man turned pirate, set in the eighteenth century, is back once again with its wholesome love story and offbeat comedy. We are talking about David Jenkins’ Our Flag Means Death, which recently released its second season, so here is all you need to know about it.
Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet, a man of the country who decides to switch careers to become a pirate, and Taika Waititi as Edward Teach, more famously known as Blackbeard, a feared pirate who crosses paths with Stede in the first season of the show.
In the first season, we see Stede’s mundane but comfortable life, of which he gets tired, leading him to quit his job, abandon his family, and live the life of a pirate. The entire season, we watch him struggle as he adjusts to a pirate’s life with the crew aboard his ship named Revenge.
His crew under his command survive the attacks of the navy and other pirates, always barely making out alive. And while their misadventures are fun to watch, the show gets spicier with the infamous Blackbeard entering the story.
While the show may not be comedic gold, the romance, the period settings, and the fact that it includes LGBTQIA+ characters in its story so naturally, as it should be, make the show a great watch.
Our Flag Means Death Season 2 Episodes 4 & 5: Recap
The third episode of the series was a ride with Zheng and Olu meeting up with the leader of the enemies, who sits with her to have dinner and come to a business agreement. As we witness Zheng’s amazing persuasion skills, we also hear the good news of the pirates finding Revenge.
The ship is flipped over in search of Ed, but he is nowhere in sight, leading us to believe that he might be no more. While Stede mourned over his assumed passing, Ed was being rescued somewhere else by a guy we are told is his old enemy, Captain Hornigold, or simply Ben.
The crew had apparently left Ed on an unknown beach, where he has a talk with Ben, revealing that he feels like he is going mad. After getting into an argument, Ed ends up breaking Ben’s neck, but the latter rises back to life, leading to Ed killing him over and over again.
Clearly, there is something not right, and it is Auntie who figures out that the Revenge had a mutiny where the crew ended up killing Ed. His body was put in a chamber, the discovery of which gets the crew thrown into a jail.
Stede comes up with a plan to not only escape from the jail but also get on their ship, Revenge, and be their way so he could be with Ed’s dead body. The episode ends with the crew managing to escape and Ed realizing that he wants to live desperately. He finds that Ben is just an imagination, giving him the strength to fight and come back to life.
With Ed back alive, the two lovers meet again, holding each other’s hand, not wanting to let go.
With the couple back with each other, completely aware of the other’s importance in their life, the show will only get more interesting.
