Kanye West is taking all the headlines again. The performer and mogul is raging all over the place, and we’re about to tell you why. Furthermore, Kanye calls out Adidas for ripping off the Yeezy slipper after Adidas dropped their new take on the Adilette 22. After the brand with the three stripes decided to renew the image of the iconic Adilette with a futuristic look, Kanye is having a gripe with the German apparel maker.
This isn’t the first time that Kanye goes out on a rant against Adidas. The slipper episode marks the rapper’s latest jab against the manufacturer. Back in 2020, the rapper had a fit about him not having a seat on the Adidas boards. Now, he’s back at it again. Read our full scoop below to find out what this is all about.
Kanye Calls Out Adidas For Ripping Off The Yeezy
Earlier this month, Otakukart covered the release of the iconic Adidas Adilette 22 slipper. A classic slide that’s been on the market for over half a century. Furthermore, the brand with the three stripes decided to go for a full 3D-printed version of the sandal using renewable materials. It was inspired by a trip to Mars to give it a unique futuristic look while also ditching the three stripes.
If you read our story linked below, you’ll realize that we also took notice that these new slippers are remarkably similar to the Yeezy or the Crocs Bembury. We’re not the only ones with a heightened sense of fashion because rapper designer Kanye West, the man behind the high-end fashion brand Yeezy took it to Instagram to complain directly to Adidas CEO Kasper Rorsted about the blatant similarities between the new Adilette and the Yeezy.
Similar Style, New Complaints, Same Partnership
Kanye West signed a collaboration with Adidas all the way back in 2013, starting a very lucrative partnership with the German apparel maker. Albeit, it hasn’t been mired by controversy. Moreover, the rapper is always very vocal about the things that the company does marketing-wise. Then, in 2016, Adidas and Kanye teamed up with Yeezy, making apparel, accessories, and footwear for everyone, marking the first time that an athletic brand and non-athlete team up for such a lucrative endeavor.
In Kayne’s opinion, the Adilette 22 is a fake Yeezy made by Adidas themselves. And he considers that to be very disrespectful. Maybe, if Adidas reached out to Kanye to design the Adilette, that would’ve made the designer feel better. Then again, the Adilette has been an Adidas staple for the past fifty years.
Corporate Mixups?
The corporate idea of mixing Yeezy and the original brand was going too far. Still, the episode was alarming enough to put Kanye out of the social media silence he’s been since his suspension from Instagram last March. Additionally, Kanye’s collaborative deal with Adidas is set to expire within four years.
On another note, the designer seems to be preparing an apparel line without the help of the German manufacturer. Can this IG rant be a teaser of his breaking apart with Adidas to start his own gig? It’d be very Kanye-ish, as he’s always impulsive. With Kanye’s latest NFT project, coupled with his signature clothesline, it’s only logical he’s looking to branch out independently now that he’s established a successful name for himself and wants to free himself out of the crutches —and clutches— of a corporate titan like Adidas. But, we will have to wait and see. Is this an impulsive thing, or is it part of a carefully orchestrated marketing strategy?
Adidas Adilette 22
The Adilette 22 will drop on June 23, 2022, on a retail price tag of US$ 55. The slides come in up to five different colors. Tell us, which one do you think is better, the Yeezy or the Adilette? All in all, Kanye seems to be forgetting that he’s playing in the same team, and he’s letting his inflated ego get the best of him. That’s all the time we have on our site for this topic.
