The fiercest fishermen in the world have returned with another season of Deadliest Catch, and from the looks of the first episode, this season is going to be much more dramatic as the groups are not only dealing with their daily quota but are also searching for a good place to fish as the Alaskan crab populations are declining rapidly.
The existing fisherman will now be focusing on protecting the Bering Sea from Illegal fishing. Deadliest Catch has been airing on television since April 12th, 2005, and is a reality series that documents Crab fishermen as they try and scavenge the Bering Sea for King and Snow Crabs. When the show was first launched in 2005, it became a hit within a few weeks, and since then, new seasons of the Discovery series have premiered each year.
Now airing in almost every region, Deadliest Catch remains the only documentary that centers around crab fishing. It was created by Thom Beers, and Mike Rowe provides narration for almost all of the seasons. After the 18th season ended in September of 2022, a new season was ordered almost immediately, which ended up premiering on April 18th, 2023.
Despite being popular among its target audience, the show has received criticism for the number of fatal scenes each episode contains. The Bering Sea might be rich in Crabs during a specific season, but it also is one of the deadliest seas to be venturing on. The high tides, the unforgiving winds, and the dangerous waves make it a risky place to be at. Most of the groups that show up at the Bering Sea are experts in what they do and have been fishing for generations.
Deadliest Catch: About The Show
Each episode of the show usually begins with the group leaving for the sea with their huge boats. The visuals are often dramatized to get the actual feeling of being in the ocean. Filming for the show requires multiple cameramen to be set up at various spots to capture any unforeseen situations. Since most of the scenes are usually filmed on the boats, two or three cameras are set up at different places across the vessel.
When the show was first being filmed, Sig Hansen revealed in an interview that a cameraman was seconds away from being crushed by a 900-pound Crab Pot. Another cast member ended up breaking three of his ribs when he fell into one of the open hatches on the boat. This is what makes Deadliest Catch live up to its name, as commercial fishing is regarded as more dangerous than flying an aircraft or being a logger. A fisherman almost always falls victim to the unforgiving waters of the Bering Sea each week.
Deadliest Catch: What Happened in Season 18?
The previous season of Deadliest Catch began on April 19th, 2022, and featured the Fishermen hearing the worst news of their life. The crab fishing industry was left in shock when the government announced that the King Crab fisheries would remain closed for the whole year. With most of the cold water adapting to a warmer temperature, the king crabs were now shifting to other regions, making the Bering Sea become endangered for the one thing it was known for.

The Alaskan King Crab (Credits: Discovery)To meet the season’s demand, Sig uses this chance to go back to his hometown, Norway. The oceans at the place were filled with Invasive King Crab species, making this a good spot for most of the Bering Sea fishermen. John and his team also focus on a newer species of crab.
Back at the Bering Sea, an Arctic storm ends up making the conditions worse, leaving most of the remaining fishermen with little to no crabs left for fishing. Jonathan goes deeper into the ocean to find a new species of crab, while Sig finds it difficult to attain the level of operations he had back in the Bering Sea on Norwegian lands. When his deckhand gets crushed during the storm, Captain Rip uses a USCG helicopter to rescue the team.
Despite being one of the most experienced crab fishermen, Sig encounters a Norwegian crew member that acts like a know-it and tries to stop Sig’s orders. We also see Captain Wild Bill trying his best to save the boat from the raging waters of Norway, which ends up leaving his propeller broken. The boat which Jake had been mortgaging ends up having a problem that causes it to capsize in the middle of the ocean.
When the news of the Bering Sea having a honey hole of King crabs arrives at Sig’s place, he heads back to Alaska to try and get ahold of some crabs himself. Cornelia Marie experiences a big typhoon, and it’s up to Josh to try and save his brother Shane from the fatal storm. In the episode titled “Deepest Alaska,” we see Jonathan sending the pot almost a mile deep into the ocean. What comes out of the pot is random unknown species. The season ends with Sig and other captains trying to move across the sea without breaking their gear.
