Following Bethesda’s confirmation that Fallout 3 Remastered is in development, former Bethesda designer Bruce Nesmith has shared what he hopes to see improved in the updated release.

Speaking about the original 2008 RPG, Nesmith admitted that its gunplay was one of the game’s weakest elements and expects Bethesda to modernize it using lessons learned from Fallout 4.

The comments come after Bethesda revealed that Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are both receiving remasters alongside news that Fallout 5 has entered preproduction.

Bruce Nesmith expects Fallout 4’s combat improvements

In an interview with FRVR in 2025, Nesmith reflected on Fallout 3’s combat system and acknowledged that it struggled to compete with other first-person shooters of its era.

“It didn’t hold up to shooters at the time.”

He pointed to Fallout 4 as the game that significantly improved the franchise’s shooting mechanics, making combat feel smoother and reducing players’ reliance on the V.A.T.S. targeting system.

Looking ahead to the remaster, Nesmith said:

“I anticipate seeing a lot of that work [we did with Fallout 4] go into it [Fallout 3 Remastered].”

Bethesda has already shown a willingness to modernize classic RPGs with The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, which introduced updated combat animations while preserving the original experience.

Many fans now expect Fallout 3 Remastered to follow a similar approach by retaining its story and world while upgrading gunplay, movement, and overall combat responsiveness. Although Bethesda has yet to reveal gameplay footage or a release window, Nesmith’s comments suggest players could see a much more refined shooting experience when the remaster arrives.
