Following is Christopher Nolan’s debut feature film, a low-budget black-and-white crime thriller about a lonely aspiring writer who begins following strangers through London for inspiration. His unusual hobby leads him to Cobb, a charismatic thief who takes him deeper into a world of burglary, manipulation, and deception. As the protagonist becomes increasingly involved with Cobb and a mysterious woman, the film’s nonlinear narrative gradually reveals that appearances cannot be trusted. Made on a remarkably small budget and filmed largely on weekends, Following introduced several of the storytelling techniques that would later become hallmarks of Nolan’s career.
