It’s a quite known fact in the bookish community that Sally Rooney is not everyone’s cup of tea. Her three novels, Normal People, Conversations With Friends, and her latest release, Beautiful World, Where Are You, have become famous and are widely loved by millions of readers across the world. However, that’s not to say that there aren’t a few readers like me who find it hard to grasp the reason behind this hype. I confess I find it difficult and truly laborious to understand the hype surrounding the author and her books.
I read Normal People last year, and if it’s safe to say, I’ll admit that I didn’t enjoy it. There were a few quotes that I’d get tattooed on my skin in a heartbeat, starting from “I’m not a religious person, but I do sometimes think God made you for me”. Yet, the book itself didn’t do much for me. But that’s just my experience, and I know everybody reads the same book differently. I really wanted to give her books a second chance, but I think I need to wise up before I can really experience these books.
But, for the people who prefer TV series and like Normal People, the latest adaptation of Sally’s book might interest them. Following her book Normal People TV adaptation which quickly became a hit, it was announced that another book of hers would be hitting the screens soon. Conversations With Friends, her debut novel, got a TV adaptation this year.
