Now that we have gotten a taste of it, we can safely say that we all know what it’s like to live in a pandemic. We have experienced the fear of getting infected, the restrictions imposed, and even the mandatory wearing of masks. The pandemic has brought a lot of changes into our lives within a short span of time.
But imagine if the pandemic lasted for generations. It would intrinsically change the very mind of humanity, and things would be drastically different for the newer generations. Mankind would settle into a “new normal,” and nothing would ever be the same again.
Here is a manga that all of us can relate to, to some degree at least. It gives us an insight into how things would have been for us if our pandemic had lasted for several years or many generations yet to come. New Normal is written and illustrated by Aihara Akito, and it tells the story of a new world just recovering from the deadly grasp of a murderous disease.
The synopsis of the New Normal is as follows. The story takes place in Tokyo, which is reeling from the effects of a disastrous pandemic that affected many generations. Several restrictions have been imposed upon the public, and one of them is that wearing a mask at all times is mandatory.
While this might not seem like an issue, wearing a mask has been going on for so long that people have forgotten what mouths look like, and showing your mouth is akin to something embarrassing and is even seen as erotic.
In these post-pandemic times, Natsuki and Hata forge a friendship that even blooms into a beautiful romance. But what of the people beyond the wall? Are there any survivors left that could pose a danger to the recouping society on this side of the barrier?

New Normal Chapter 28 Recap
Erika is taken in by Karin and the others, and Erika tells her that Hata will come to rescue her no matter what. Karin leaves her in her room and is lost in thought when her friend asks her what’s wrong. She replies that she is jealous of Erika as she has never got to experience the feelings Erika had,
As they are conversing about youth and the feelings of love, Yatsuma comes into the room, and he brings out an ice box filled with what looks like packets of blood. He says that as long as they have these in their possession, the pandemic is in the bag.
Natsuki and Hata are sitting in their room watching a video by Erika’s brother. He tells Hata that he is not to be blamed for what happened to Erika. Natsuki apologizes for going to the anti-mask meeting, and she feels that it is her fault that Erika was kidnapped.
Suddenly, the two of them feel hungry. The only food available was a single jumbo-sized ramen, and they decided to share it. Natsuki wants Hata to eat with her as she doesn’t want to be alone. After dinner, they lie together without wearing their masks.
Hata thanks Natsuki for being with him and helping him avoid feeling all those crushed feelings. But Natsuki tells him that she might be the one who wanted them together the most and apologizes again, teary-eyed. Hata hugs Natsuki and tells her it’s not her fault. They both lean in for a kiss.
