What will be the premise of The Gold?
The Gold is set to chronicle the tale of the famed Brink’s-Mat robbery and is based on an in-depth survey and discussion with several of those involved. Six armed criminals set out on November 26, 1983, to do “a conventional Old Kent Highway armed robbery.”
However, they discovered physical Gold worth £26 million when they smashed into the Brink’s-Mat security facility close to Heathrow Airport. Thanks to a security officer who was complicit in the theft, the robbers could enter the warehouse.
Once there, they doused the employees in gasoline and threatened them with a box of matches if they did not divulge the password to the vault. The theft went down in the British criminal past as a key moment, and its effects were felt far and wide.
Large-scale international laundering was born due to the sale of gold bullion, and the illicit profits fueled the real estate boom in London Dockland. It brought together both blue-collar and white-collar crooks and set off a series of incidents that resulted in murder.
