Triangle of Sadness Ending Explained
The movie begins with the two leads, Carl, a model, and Yaya, an influencer dating. They have a turbulent relationship as they discuss the gender roles and Yaya’s expectations towards Carl being unfair in Carl’s perspective.
They are later invited to an all-expense paid luxury cruise as a part of their job to promote it on social media. This luxurious cruise trip turns out to be a mix of idealism for the class division and the lives of privileged and wealthy people who are also present on the cruise.
They aren’t necessarily dependent on money and yet are nothing beyond it. We see the scenes of their pampered and luxurious meals and treatment until the trip takes a dangerous turn.
The rough weather makes the ship sink, causing a frenzy in the people aboard. We see scenes of people vomiting, defecating, panicking, and some even hopelessly trying to save their lives. Östlund comically portrays the desperation of humans to protect themselves and their vulnerability in times of distress.
We see a conversation between Thomas and Dimitry over the intercom as they argue about socialism and capitalism. The chain of problematic events doesn’t end here. The yacht is later attacked by pirates who take over the yacht.
A few people manage to escape from the yacht and take shelter on an island. The people who managed to escape were Carl, Yaya, Dimitry, Therese, Paula, Jarmo, ship mechanic Nelson, and cleaner Abigail. Abigail starts ascertaining her authority over the group as she is the only one who knows about survival skills. She asks everyone to refer to her as the captain and continues to enjoy special privileges in this role.
She gathers power as the captain, which makes Carl deviate towards her for similar privileges. This leads Yaya to feel jealous of their developing relationship. Despite all, Carl considers leaving her for Abigail.
The following day, Yaya decided to hike to the top of the hill to see what was on the other side, hoping they would get some help. Abigail insists Yaya join her on the hike, and Carl expresses his concerns. As they reach the hilltop, they converse about how Yaya respects her for gaining power over the group so quickly.
As the women reach the other side of the hill, they are shocked by seeing a modern elevator built on the side of a rock. Both are overwhelmed as they cannot understand what’s happening there. They soon realize that the island is not merely an isolated island but a fully functional luxury resort.
The women are ecstatic about being rescued from their terrible reality. Abigail, who was previously a cleaner, realizes that if they are rescued and sent back to their real lives, then she’ll lose all the power she gained here as a captain and will have to go from being at the top of the social class to the bottom once again.
The hierarchy starts to diminish at the same moment as Yaya promises Abigail that she’ll hire her as her assistant once they go back. The movie ends with an enthralling cliffhanger as Abigail picks up a rock, presumably to kill Yaya.
The film closes with Carl running through the jungle frantically. The viewers are open to interpreting the ending with the death of Yaya and probably Abigail returning to her powerful situation and lying about the situation. Carl’s running through the can be seen as going out to search for the women or knowing the truth itself. The future lives of the others on the island are not shown or described in any form.
