Hidden Treasures of the National Trust is a British docuseries that follows museum conservators and curators making their trade and explaining to us the story, restoration, and conservation processes that the pieces of the vast British patrimony must experiment with for preservation, showcase, and study. The series is produced by the National Trust in partnership with BBC.
On each episode, we’ll go around different locations and museums in the UK to learn about these places, the historical artifacts they hold, and the stories of the people trusted by the British government to preserve them for future generations, all while learning valuable lessons about some of the rarely-seen objects that are held in the National Trust.
Across six episodes, we’re going to learn a lot of things about the vast collections secured at the National Trust, from the stories associated with them to the preservation techniques and efforts used to keep them in their original condition. The debut episode took us to Lincolnshire, we saw how a Chinese figurine is restored, and we saw how a painting gets carefully prepared for an overseas journey; what will be ahead in the following episodes?
Hidden Treasures of the National Trust Episode 1 Recap
The debut episode of this docuseries presented us with an idea of what is the National Trust, where it is located, and how the government does to upkeep and maintains this vast collection of items, artworks, and artifacts that make up this cultural and historical patrimony. We are going to the Midlands. We visit Linconlshire’s Belton House to see conservation professionals clean a portrait from the seventeenth century very carefully.
Then, we see how an ancient Chinese figurine was restored, and it’s an unbelievable transformation. Lastly, the show takes us to Derbyshire, where a portrait painting of Elizabeth I gets packed under extremely careful conditions for an overseas travel to be showcased in the United States and Canada.
