It’s been a while since David Benioff screwed up Game of Thrones with that series finale. But this summer, Dragons and Westeros are making a comeback to the HBO screens with House of The Dragon, a Game of Thrones prequel based on Fire & Blood, a book by George R. R. Martin set for release later this August.
So, you better get ready for another run at Westeros, this time a few centuries prior the events of GoT. In this article, we shall explain what is House of The Dragon about, who will be in it. We’ll show you the trailer and we’ll tell you the details about the release date. So, without further ado, let’s begin.
What Is It About?
The events of the series, which is based on Martin’s book Fire & Blood, occur centuries before those of Game of Thrones. It centers on House Targaryen and the Dance of the Dragons, the interfamily conflict. From complete casting information to all that is known about the plot, we have compiled everything else that is known about the new show right here. And that’s just the beginning. Continue reading to catch up on everything House of the Dragon-related.
About 300 years prior to the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will have its beginning. The canceled Naomi Watts prequel, which was supposed to take place “thousands of years” before Game of Thrones and explore the early history of ancient houses as well as the origin of the White Walkers, is much more recent history than what might seem like a long time ago.
Who Is In The Cast Of House Of The Dragon?
Ser Criston Cole, the common-born Dornish son of the Steward of the Lord of Blackhaven, will be played by Fabien Frankel (who most recently made an appearance in the Netflix and BBC One crime series The Serpent). Cole is said to have “no claim to land or titles; all he has to his name, his honor, and his preternatural skill with a sword.” Outlander actor Graham McTavish confirmed to the press that he would appear in the show.
The project also recently welcomed Steve Toussaint, Rhys Ifans, Eve Best, and Sonoya Mizuno. Toussaint will play Lord Corlys Velaryon, the most notorious sea rogue in Westeros’s history and the head of the largest navy in the world. He is a powerful member of House Velaryon, a Valyrian bloodline that dates back as far as House Targaryen. Best will portray Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, a dragon rider and the wife of Lord Corlys Velaryon, and Ifans will play Otto Hightower, the obedient Hand of the King. Mizuno, meanwhile, will portray Mysaria, a woman who came to Westeros with nothing and worked her way up to become Prince Daemon Targaryen, the heir to the throne’s dependable ally.
Return To Westeros
Given that Westerosi societies were still thriving and turbulent during the time covered by House of the Dragon, viewers can anticipate political maneuverings akin to those in Game of Thrones explored in the prequel series. House of the Dragon is based on a book that is heavily focused on ancestral hierarchies, warring nations, and a massive civil war, as opposed to the canceled prequel, which would have more likely focused primarily on fantasy elements. That should translate to a prequel series with a tone more akin to Game of Thrones, a program that is equally concerned with dragons, the seedy side of society, and the ruling class.
Targaryen Clan Represented!
Then there are Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy, who will play Prince Daemon and Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, respectively, and Olivia Cooke, who has agreed to play Alicent Hightower. The Targaryen civil war that occupies a significant portion of George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, the book on which House of the Dragon is based, culminates in the Dance of the Dragons, in which the two Targaryen royals play pivotal roles.
Given their pervasiveness in the book, these individuals will undoubtedly play significant roles in House of the Dragon’s events. We’ll likely see them throughout several seasons. However, as Game of Thrones demonstrated, TV shows aren’t always completely true to their original works. Interestingly, young actors have been cast for two of these characters. Emily Carey will play the young Alicent Hightower, and Milly Alcock will play a younger Rhaenyra Targaryen.
