Meet Dr. Lance Sweets
Sweets is not a usual character but rather the most peculiar one with prodigy-like traits. At the age of 22, he was a holder of two doctorates, making him about 14-15 when he started attending college and attained his master’s. He has described his childhood to be a disoriented one, with being left for adoption by his biological parents. He tries to track down his biological parents but can never reach them.
He lived in foster care till the age of 6 and had a terrible experience with foster care parents. It was revealed that he was beaten and assaulted by his parents for the pettiest of things. And later, he was adopted by an elderly couple, who were a blessing to him and also inspired him to become a psychologist.
His character has been provided with very less information about his teenage years and education years, and most of this information was uncovered by Dr. Gordon Wyatt, who found it after reading the Sweets manuscripts that he had prepared about Booth and Brennan’s working relationship that is filled with constant ups and down.
Upon joining the FBI team, he wasn’t greeted with the warmest welcome, and many members even questioned the validity of his degrees since he got them very early in life when most people were only completing their college degrees.
His young age and youthful look pose trouble for his colleagues to take him seriously at times despite his insightful and highly professional advice, which often has helped the team. He is called by variations of his name to maintain the humourous tone of the show and one of the most catchy ones being “The Shrink” that Booth called him.
Over the seasons, he develops a reliable and great relationship with the agents and gets due recognition for his skills and work ethic. He also builds a romantic relationship with Daisy Wick, and they are together on and off. She gets impregnated with their child, who is revealed in season 10 and is named Seeley after Seeley Booth.
What Happened to Sweets on Bones?
People admired the refreshing character of Sweets portrayed by Daley and were heartbroken when the character was killed off in season 10 beginning. After receiving a distress call from a junior FBI Agent, Aubrey, both Booth and Bones rush to his rescue, and upon reaching the deserted parking lot, they find an injured Sweets along with terrified Aubrey, who claims that there have been gunshots.
Waiting for the paramedics, Bones and Booth try to help Sweets to be alive, and Bones identifies that he has not been shot by a gun but rather has internal trauma and is bleeding out on the inside. Sweets reveal that it was he who fired the gunshots at the assailant and tells Booth that he must be proud that he fought back. Unfortunately, after a few minutes, he succumbs to death due to his injuries and passes away next to Bones and Booth. Sweet’s character was killed off due to scheduling issues with Daley’s schedule as he was on set to debut his directorial journey.
