Shinkai’s acclaimed works, including “Your Name,” “Weathering With You,” and the recent “Suzume,” have left a significant mark on anime cinema. Like many creators, Shinkai is an avid fan of the medium and recently shared one of his favorite picks.
Shinkai’s career launched in 1998, beginning with his work as an animator on the short film “The World Be Enclosed.”
His talents extended beyond anime, contributing to video game cut scenes for titles such as “The Legend of Heroes IIII,” “Ys II Eternal,” and “Ef: A Fairy Tale of The Two.” While Shinkai hasn’t disclosed his next project, any announcement is sure to draw considerable interest.
Recently, Shinkai expressed his admiration for the franchise Uma Musume Pretty Derby and its latest film, “New Era’s Door.” Reflecting on his experience, Shinkai said, “I watched ‘Uma Musume Pretty Derby: New Era’s Door’ without prior knowledge, and it was a stunning experience.
The film demonstrated exceptional cel animation with remarkable visuals. The sound, direction, and storytelling were confidently executed, but what impressed me the most was the color design.
The play of light and shadow in the opening underground tunnel scene and the race scenes created a narrow, almost suffocating atmosphere that was electrifying. The sudden live performance was surprising but incredibly enjoyable, offering a peak into a different culture. I’m thrilled I watched it!”
Shinkai’s enthusiasm for “Uma Musume Pretty Derby: New Era’s Door” highlights his appreciation for innovative and well-crafted animation, further solidifying his place as a key figure in the anime industry.
