The Theater Owners of America is a trade organization that organizes a popular conference called CinemaCon. This year, that conference took place at the posh Caesar’s Palace Colosseum in Las Vegas, Nevada. But what movies were announced at CinemaCon 2022? Well, after you read our scoop, you’ll be excited to learn all the upcoming titles that are coming to a theater near you.
This year’s CinemaCon is full of surprises, and it isn’t over yet as many studios unveiled what’s coming next for this year and the next. That’s right! For example, Sony Pictures confirmed a Ghostbusters sequel, a third Venom movie, and a Whitney Houston biopic. But that’s not all! There are more Marvel movies coming. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, and let’s unpack this bit by bit. Let’s begin.
What Is CinemaCon?
CinemaCon is a trade show organized by the Theater Owners of America guild that every year calls upon studios to showcase their best projects and makes sure to accommodate the best features for the entertainment industry. Also, the Theater Owners of America represent both the major operators of theaters as well as independent theater owners, and at each CinemaCon, they gather to talk about the events concerning their guild.
At this conference, all the major studios take a turn to announce to the theater owners what they plan to do and showcase. That way, the theater operators can prepare ahead for what’s coming. As stated earlier, this year’s venue is the Caesars Palace Colosseum. The conference takes place for three days, starting from Monday, April 25, 2022, until April 28, 2022. And in this year’s CinemaCon, we saw some major titles announced, and we’re going to tell you all about them in the next section!
What Movies Were Announced At CinemaCon 2022?
CinemaCon 2022 is a hot event, that’s for sure. Firstly, it has the participation of five major Hollywood studios —Walt Disney Pictures, Warner Bros., Paramount, Sony and Universal, the Big Five— as well as NEON and Lionsgate Films. This conference is very important because it’s the equivalent of ComicCon to movies. It’s the place where the movie industry leadership gathers with the theater execs to mingle. It’s not open like the ComicCon. It’s a professional guild event.
What’s important for us covering the entertainment sector is the vast amount of information we get from the studios. What’s coming next —movie-wise— who might be starring in these movies, and what that’s going to be all about. So, here are some of the movies that these studios announced at CinemaCon 2022.
Warner Bros.
Warner has a lot going for them. Firstly, they have to compete with industry titan Marvel, but they have a few contenders like Black Adam and The Flash — both with a highly expected teaser— albeit the Ezra Miller controversy is a stain that needs some PR scrubbing. That’s for sure. And last but not least, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
There are a few unconfirmed rumors about Warner’s participation: These are Creed III, The Batman 2, Dune II, League of Superpets, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Elvis —poised to premiere at Cannes Film Festival.
Sony Pictures
Sony dropped a few bombs movie-wise in their presentation: Bullet Train —with Joey King and Brad Pitt—a Ghostbusters sequel, Venom 3, a Whitney Houston biopic, Father Stu, Where the Crawdads Sing, Devotion, Man from Toronto, and Spider-Man Across the Spider-verse Part One.
Paramount
Paramount will screen Top Gun: Maverick, drop a few comments from its directors, and it’s rumored but not yet confirmed that they will tease a Dungeons & Dragons Movie, a sixth Scream movie, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Mission: Impossible 7, and Babylon.
Universal
Universal and Focus Features will screen attendees to an Ethan Hawke movie called The Black Phone. Also, they will tease Jurassic World Domination, Minions: The Rise of Gru. And it is rumored that they’ll tease The Last Wish, a new Puss in Boots movie, Halloween Ends, and Fast X.
Disney
Disney has a lot going on this year. They’re presenting Avatar 2, maybe with a teaser trailer. They’re also hyping Doctor Strange: Multiverse of Madness, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Thor: Love & Thunder, and the Buzz Lightyear movie.
Lionsgate
Last but not least, Lionsgate Films —the shyest of the bunch— will make a standard keynote address and probably tease a few films like John Wick, The Devil’s Light, Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, and Shotgun Wedding.
