Tokyo Revengers is an action-packed anime of the shonen genre with mystery and suspense added to the mix. To say that this anime will keep you wanting more would be an understatement, as this series has the power to keep you at the very edge of your seats for every episode.
Each episode of season 1 has a different twist that keeps you guessing. And the season ended in such a way that it will leave you questioning everything you know. Tokyo Revengers is originally a manga, the story, and illustrations of which are done by Ken Wakui.
The anime adaptation of the series is produced by Liden Films, and the director is Koichi Hatsumi. The series is licensed by Crunchyroll and Muse Communications outside Asia and South Asia, respectively. The synopsis of the story goes like this.
The story revolves around Takemichi Hanagaki, who is struggling through his life. His life is not at all what it used to be. Around 12 years ago, he was living life to the fullest. He had a girlfriend and had forged great friendships throughout his high school years.
However, the present Takemichi has none of it as he had broken up with his girlfriend and was separated from his friendship circle as well. But little does he know that fate is about to take a turn in his dull life.
One day, he comes to know that his ex-girlfriend has been murdered by the notorious Tokyo Manji Gang of Japan. Soon after, he gets involved in an accident. But instead of dying, he is transported 12 years into the past, back to his golden days.
Realizing his power, Takemichi becomes a part of the then-decent Tokyo Manji Gang and decides to change the sequence of unfortunate events that led to the death of his ex-girlfriend Hinata and stops the gang from going corrupt.
Along the way, he understands the importance of friendship as he makes some close friends within the gang. Takemichi, with the help of Hinata’s brother Naoto, vows to save the love of his life and all his friends with his unique power of traveling through time.
Tokyo Revengers season 1 recap
The season starts with Takemichi finding out about Hinata’s death, and later, he is pushed onto the train tracks by a mysterious someone. But surprisingly, the incident doesn’t kill him. Instead, he is transported 12 years into the past, back to his high school days.
Takemichi realizes that he can switch between the past and the present with just a handshake from Naoto, Hinata’s younger brother. Naoto, who is a police officer in Takemichi’s present life, tells him that he needs to travel through time to keep two people from ever meeting.
It is because Mikey and Kisaki Tetta met that the Tokyo Manji Gang to a turn for the worse and became a corrupt group full of dangerous criminals. It is also the reason why Naoto’s sister, Hinata, died. Takemichi tries his best to change the events of the past and even gets to spend quality time with Hinata but then is transported back to the present.
Because he changed some events in the past, the present did change. But not how he and Naoto wanted it to change. They find out that the Tokyo Manji Gang split into two. One half was under Mikey, while the other was under Kisaki. And because of the conflict between the two factions, Draken died.
So, to save Draken, Takemichi goes back to the past. Several incidents happen, but Takemichi is able to settle the fight between Mikey and Draken and eventually ends up saving Draken’s life. The next time he travels to the present, Takemichi turns out to be the executive member of Toman. There in the board meeting, Kisaki Tetta was also present.
Kisaki seemed to have changed for the better, but then he drugs Takemichi and Chifuyu and binds them using ropes. Takemichi realizes that Kisaki is behind everything, and Kisaki shoots Chifuyu in the head, killing him. Next, he points the gun at Takemichi, and the loud bang of a gunshot is heard.
