Fans find out just how far Matthias will go to conceal his identity in The Irrational Season 1 Episode 10. The majority of the episode centers on Wes Banning, the original bombing suspect who mishandled his parole following Matthias’ visit and held Alec Mercer and his aides captive.
Alec and his group meet the man who was imprisoned twenty years prior for the church explosion. In order to save Alec, Phoebe, and Rizwan, Marisa and Kylie collaborate. Jace makes a crucial discovery that transforms the case.
It turns out that Wes was partially a victim, not just someone who thought he was one. Even though he participated in the church explosion 20 years ago and helped with other bombings while he was struggling, he wasn’t given many options when it came to defending Dahlia, his daughter.
He has only taken efforts to protect her from Matthias’s threats, so Alec and we can see him. Alec and we may now view him differently because all of his acts have been to protect her from Matthias’ threats. He is not the heartless psychopath that the media has painted him as.
Recap
And when he discovered that Matthias—the true mastermind behind the church explosion—wanted him dead, he broke out of jail and knocked on Alec’s door to beg for assistance. Instead of merely brushing him off, Alec uses his skills to get him talking, learns a great deal about Wes’ life, and even develops a bond with the man who left him permanently burned.
The plot eventually takes a dramatic turn when Matthias threatens his daughter once more with a bomb if Wes doesn’t blow himself up over the phone to Alec’s office while using Wes’ cloned voice. Alec had a plan for that as well. You might be asking how they got out of the building that the FBI was encircling—as Alec’s observant sister noticed that everyone’s phones were off and knew they were in danger.
Rizwan and Phoebe ran to safety while Wes set up the bombs in the office, allowing them to leave without being noticed. Dahlia was harder to persuade that she was in danger because she had seen the news and knew her dad was sought, but in the end Alec was able to talk her out of it and she let them inside.
She must have been extremely shocked by the situation, but fortunately Alec was there to explain her father’s actions that led to his disappearance over the years. In the end, Wes made amends and found closure with the only person who has ever mattered, demonstrating that he has only ever loved and looked out for her.
Matthias, on the other hand, seems to be trying to squash any new notions that might emerge while also making a lot of effort to tie up loose ends. He clearly knows that the FBI is looking into him, and it’s not a coincidence that Jace ended up unconscious—possibly dead—on Marisa’s living room floor; it indicates that he discovered the truth too soon and killed him before he could inform her.
