The Blood of Dawnwalker has become an unexpected example in the growing debate over how much money modern AAA games actually need. According to a September 18, 2026 Bloomberg report, Rebel Wolves developed its open-world dark-fantasy RPG with a budget of approximately $40 million, a figure that places the project closer to the AA category than the hundreds-of-millions-dollar budgets associated with some major AAA releases.
The figure is particularly notable because The Blood of Dawnwalker is an ambitious action RPG featuring an open world, branching choices, a day-and-night system and a vampire protagonist. The game was developed by Rebel Wolves, a Polish studio founded by veterans of CD Projekt Red, and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. It launched on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on September 3, 2026.
NetEase Provided the $40 Million Development Budget
The reported budget came through Rebel Wolves’ deal with NetEase. Game director and studio co-founder Konrad Tomaszkiewicz initially funded the project’s early development himself in 2022, when the team was working on a prototype and attempting to attract an investment partner.
NetEase eventually acquired a 26% stake in Rebel Wolves and provided approximately $40 million for development. Production moved forward after the studio spent much of 2023 recruiting, with the team eventually growing beyond its original plans. Reports indicate Rebel Wolves had around 90 employees in 2024 before expanding to approximately 160.
The financing arrangement is important because the $40 million figure refers to the game’s development funding. It should not automatically be interpreted as the complete cost of the project, since marketing, publishing, distribution and other expenses may fall outside the reported development budget.
Dawnwalker’s Budget Is Small Compared With Modern AAA Games

The $40 million figure has attracted attention because of how it compares with the enormous budgets increasingly associated with AAA development. Bloomberg’s report characterized The Blood of Dawnwalker as a game operating in the AA space, rather than competing financially with the largest blockbuster productions.
That distinction does not mean the game lacks ambition. Rebel Wolves retained several systems that require significant development resources, including an open-world setting, branching narrative structure and a vampire mechanic that changes how protagonist Coen interacts with the world depending on the time of day.
Tomaszkiewicz also explained that the team was careful not to lose sight of the project’s original foundations. He said,
“We decided we’d do everything to not change the foundations of the game.”
He added that those foundations remained consistent with the original pitch because changing them would affect the entire game.
The Game’s Early Success Adds More Weight to the Story
The budget revelation is arriving alongside strong early results for The Blood of Dawnwalker. The game reportedly surpassed 1 million copies sold within days of its September 3 launch, giving Rebel Wolves a significant commercial result for its debut project.
The game’s reception has also strengthened the argument that a large budget is not automatically necessary to produce a successful modern RPG. GamesRadar reported that Dawnwalker earned an 84 Metacritic score and strong Steam reception, while also noting its position within the growing AA game space.
That does not mean the AAA model is suddenly obsolete. Larger productions can support enormous worlds, huge casts, extensive marketing campaigns and years of post-launch content. However, Dawnwalker demonstrates how a studio can pursue a high-profile RPG while keeping its development spending substantially below the figures associated with some of the industry’s biggest productions.
Rebel Wolves’ approach could become particularly interesting as publishers continue looking for ways to control development costs. The studio’s relationship with NetEase allowed it to secure substantial funding while retaining a degree of independence, while Bandai Namco handled publishing.
The success of The Blood of Dawnwalker could encourage other studios to consider similar models. Instead of endlessly expanding development teams and budgets, developers may look toward controlled scope, established design foundations and carefully targeted systems to create ambitious games without taking on the financial risk of a traditional blockbuster.
For now, the $40 million figure remains one of the most interesting aspects of The Blood of Dawnwalker’s development story. Its commercial performance will ultimately determine whether this approach becomes a compelling alternative to conventional AAA production or simply an impressive success story from one unusually efficient studio.
