The Blood of Dawnwalker is set to receive a significant change to its Japanese Steam version, with developer Rebel Wolves confirming that restrictions on blood and gore will be removed in the upcoming Update 1.1. The announcement follows criticism from Japanese players who found that the localized release altered violent scenes despite the game’s vampire-focused premise.

According to Game Spark, the update will remove the censorship applied to blood and gore in the Japanese Steam version. Rebel Wolves announced the change on October 16, with Update 1.1 scheduled to arrive the following week. The developer has not yet confirmed an exact release date.

WHY THE BLOOD OF DAWNWALKER’S JAPANESE VERSION FACED CRITICISM

The Blood of Dawnwalker launched on September 3, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Set in 14th-century Europe, the dark fantasy action RPG follows Coen, a protagonist who lives as a human during the day and becomes a vampire at night.

However, the Japanese release featured changes to several graphic elements, including combat blood effects, violent deaths, dismemberment, exposed organs, and some character appearances. Certain sexual content was also modified. These differences had been disclosed before launch, but players raised concerns about how extensively the changes affected the experience.

The restrictions also extended to the Japanese Steam version, drawing criticism because the game revolves around vampires, blood, and brutal combat. Some changes were particularly noticeable during combat, while the opening sequence was also affected by the censorship.

Rebel Wolves addressed the backlash on September 4, stating that it had begun working on removing the blood-expression restrictions and adding other language options. Update 1.1 now represents a concrete step toward addressing those complaints.

UPDATE 1.1 DOES NOT YET CONFIRM UNCENSORED CONSOLE VERSIONS

The announced change specifically names the Japanese version of The Blood of Dawnwalker on Steam. Rebel Wolves has not clarified whether the same removal of blood and gore censorship will apply to the Japanese PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions. The update announcement also does not confirm whether the existing changes to sexual content will be reversed.

This distinction matters for players who purchased the game on consoles expecting the same changes as the PC release. Until the developer provides further details, console owners should not assume that Update 1.1 will restore every scene altered in the Japanese release.

The update will also introduce gameplay improvements, including revised combat camera behaviour, better targeting and lock-on controls, expanded subtitle options, and more than 1,100 improvements and fixes. Players will also be able to pet dogs and cats and use a new item to reset Coen’s abilities.

For Japanese Steam players, however, the removal of blood and gore censorship is the most consequential change. It directly addresses a major complaint about the localized release, although the status of console versions and other content restrictions remains unresolved.
