Superdad is a 1973 comedy movie, a hilarious yet heartwarming, family-friendly movie. The filming locations of Superdad are in different cities in California. Some of the filming also took place in the Walt Disney Studios. The movie will take you through the life of a helicopter dad and his rebel daughter. Although with good intentions, the dad meddles in her daughter’s life. But later realizes he shouldn’t have!
The story is relatable as it focuses on relationships within a family. Moreover, it addresses the generation gap that parents struggle with. Charlie McCready wants to help his daughter make better friends. However, his attempts backfire because her friends were not bad influences after all. If you love family movies, this one’s a great watch. And like every other comedy movie, this too ends on a happy note.
Where are the Filming Locations of Superdad?
The filming took place in major cities in California, especially on the hills of San Francisco. A lot of the family scenes are near beaches, that’s the Wedge at Newport Beach, CA. The iconic Waldo Point in Sausalito, amongst the houseboats, is also a major location of the film.
If you have seen the film, you know about the wedding sequence at the end of it. That scene is set at the first Christian church in Pasadena. It’s a beautiful scene when Wendy walks down the aisle. What is Superdad about?
The story revolves around the McCready family. The dad, Charlie McCready, is an overbearing parent who wants to look cool. In his attempt to fill the “generation gap,” he ends up embarrassing his daughter Wendy even more. Despite his many efforts to impress her friends & her, whether by playing volleyball or water skiing, he fails at mending the gap.
Charlie is a type of parent who wants to be in control. He is a lawyer who wants his daughter to be a lawyer as well. More than a lawyer, he wants his daughter to have the perfect friends, partner, and life. On the other hand, Wendy, who is tired of her father’s interference, becomes a rebel against everything he stands for. He even goes to the extent of sending Wendy a fake scholarship letter. So that she can’t go to the same college as Bart. And that breaks Wendy’s heart when she learns the truth.
Wendy’s friends, according to Charlie, are not ‘very ambitious’. He also hates her boyfriend Bart and attempts to keep her at bay with him. But as they say, too much meddling never leads to anything good. The same goes with Charlie, and soon he realizes that his assumptions are wrong. Meanwhile, he also learns that Bart is a nice guy, and so are Wendy’s friends. The movie ends on a happy note with Bart and Wendy’s wedding.
Themes of The Movie
The movie is from the 70s, and that is a time of cultural changes. It developed a huge gap between the younger and older people. Although this film was not a hit, it did justice to that topic or theme. The film also highlights the counterculture of the 70s. For instance, when Wendy joins the counterculture group in college. Or when she gets involved with a hippie, Klutch. But besides the serious themes, the film is a total riot. The antics of Charlie throughout the film are silly yet hilarious.
