Wataru Momose, the author of Romantic Killer, brings us a refreshing new perspective on female leads through this fun-packed romantic comedy. With the manga ending back in 2020, Netflix decided to take over for its anime adaptation and brought the series to life in August 2022.
With 12 episodes in total, The anime was well received by the public and heightened the popularity of not just the show but also the ‘Otome game’ plot in general. After great demand, Romantic Killer will be making its comeback with Season 2 on Netflix very soon, so stay tuned for the latest updates!
‘Otome games’ (also known as ‘Maiden games’) are story-based video games catering to the female population, whose main goal is to have the player fall in love with the male counterpart(s) inside the game.
This genre of anime usually involves multiple male love interests so as to satisfy the viewers with the freedom of option for the female protagonist. The fairytale storyline that most of these often end up following is like the icing on top!
Romantic Killer is one of many; evidence of such a plot falling under the reverse harem genre bringing heart-throbbing moments to the table. Anime with similar ‘otome game’ plots include Diabolik lovers, Utano Prince-Sama, and My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes lead to Doom! that is worth checking out if Romantic Killer is your cup of tea!
Romantic Killer is fun, heartwarming, and, all-in-all, a satisfying anime to sit down and watch. Be it the plot or animation, this romantic comedy does not lack in any way or sort. The exciting events and incidents that follow the female protagonist make it binge-worthy, leaving no space for distraction or boredom.
Recap of Season 1 (Spoilers!)
Anzu Hoshino, our beloved protagonist, has no interest in complicating her life with romance. The only love she has is reserved exclusively for three things – video games, chocolate, and Momohiki, her cat.
Romantic killer captures the audience’s attention through its magical storyline and Hoshino’s thrilling yet comical journey to finding love. The series of events that follow this “anti-heroine” throughout the process brings a closeness between the protagonist and the watchers.
In season 1, Anzu counters Riri, a love cupid, while playing an Otome game and becomes a test subject to experience a real-life dating harem. She’s forced to let go of her three favorite things and focus on building a love life for herself. Tsukasa Kazuki, the most popular guy in school, becomes the first love interest in Hoshino’s life, and Riri is hell-bent on setting her up with him.
Riri, this tiny wizard creature hovers around Anzu and throws good-looking guys her way in hopes of sparking romance – some would call it a dream come true! But for Anzu, this was as bad as it could get. She had no interest whatsoever in pursuing any of the guys Riri tried to match-make her with and showed restraint. She was not going to let a wizard turn her love life into a dating sim!
But as the series moves forward, Hoshino is seen to have more personal interactions with her love interests. Tsukasa, Junta, and Hijiri, with their unique quirks and approaches toward Anzu, leave the viewers with a soft spot for at least one, if not all, of them. The attention to building a connection between Anzu and the boys helps the show feel realistic in its unrealistic backdrop.
Season 1 ends with Anzu being given an ultimatum to pick her romantic partner before high school ends, or she’ll have to sacrifice her beloved video games, chocolates, and Momohiki forever! The development in their relationship with Anzu keeps us waiting in anticipation- who will she choose?
