Pocketpair Says Cattiva Was Expected to “Fade Into the Background” Before Becoming a Palworld Mascot

Pocketpair’s John “Bucky” Buckley says Cattiva’s popularity came as a surprise, with the pink Pal eventually becoming one of Palworld’s most recognizable creatures.

When Palworld launched, Pocketpair had plenty of unusual creatures competing for players’ attention. However, not every Pal that looked memorable to the developers was expected to become a fan favorite. According to Pocketpair head of communications and publishing John “Bucky” Buckley, Cattiva was one character he never expected to become especially popular.

Speaking with Gaming World Interviews, Buckley discussed which Pals surprised him most after Palworld became a global success. He emphasized that his comments represented his personal opinion rather than an official position from Pocketpair.

Buckley recalled Cattiva alongside Chikipi and Lamball as the creatures players encounter early after arriving on the game’s beach. While he was confident that Lamball would connect with players, he expected Cattiva and Chikipi to eventually receive less attention.

Cattiva Unexpectedly Became a Palworld Mascot

Buckley said he thought Cattiva and Chikipi would

“fade into—not irrelevance, either—but fade into the background.”

However, Cattiva ended up taking a very different path.

While Buckley believes Chikipi has largely faded from the spotlight, Cattiva became one of Palworld’s most recognizable characters. He described the pink feline simply as “the mascot.”

The Pocketpair lead also pointed to Chillet as another Pal that became particularly recognizable among fans. Regional popularity has played a role as well, with Buckley noting that Cattiva is “everywhere” in China.

The unexpected popularity of these creatures could potentially encourage Pocketpair to revisit some of its unused Pal concepts. Buckley previously described the studio’s discarded designs as a kind of “graveyard,” suggesting there could be more forgotten creatures that fans might unexpectedly embrace.

Buckley also revealed that the enthusiasm surrounding Snoz was surprising to the development team.

“Gamers are really into that snail or slug, whatever you want to call it,”

he said during the Gaming World Interviews discussion.
