Monster Hunter Outlanders brings Capcom's monster-hunting franchise to mobile with a free-to-play model and optional in-game purchases.

Monster Hunter Outlanders will let players experience all its storylines without spending money, according to development director Bryan Li. Developed by Tencent’s TiMi Studio Group in collaboration with Capcom, the mobile game brings the publisher’s popular monster-hunting franchise to iOS and Android with touchscreen controls, exploration activities, and a new main storyline.

In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, published on October 29, 2026, Li explained how the developers plan to balance free access with in-game purchases. He confirmed that players can experience the game’s storylines, core gameplay modules, and essential systems without paying. The announcement addresses a key question surrounding the franchise’s transition to a free-to-play mobile model.

Monster Hunter Outlanders Promises Free Access to Its Story Content

Li emphasized that spending money will not be necessary to access the game’s main content.

“Without spending a single penny, people will be able to enjoy all the storylines, all the core game modules, and all the key function systems without any kind of problems,”

the development director told GamesIndustry.biz. This means the developers intend to keep the central story experience accessible to players regardless of whether they make purchases.

However, the game will still include several monetization options. Li identified three categories: acquiring additional adventurers, cosmetic customization items, and features designed to save time or improve convenience. He clarified that additional adventurers will offer different hunting styles rather than necessarily being more powerful than other characters. The team also has

“zero intention to sell power through those customizations,”

he said, describing cosmetic items as a way for players to express themselves.

Capcom’s official announcement confirms that Monster Hunter Outlanders is a free-to-play mobile game with in-app purchases. However, the extent to which individual purchases affect progression and gameplay will be important to watch as players experience the monetization system.

New Storyline and Mobile-Friendly Hunting Features

Beyond its free story content, Monster Hunter Outlanders introduces a new main storyline and additional activities throughout its explorable environments. The developers have also expanded the crafting system and added traversal gadgets, including zip lines and ballistas, to make travelling through the world more engaging. These features are intended to complement the familiar monster-hunting experience rather than simply reproduce the structure of the mainline games.

The team has also developed two control options to accommodate different players. Classic Mode targets people with experience in mobile action games, while Adventure Mode offers simplified controls for less experienced players. Li said the developers repeatedly test gameplay sessions to find a suitable balance for shorter mobile playtimes.

Capcom is helping TiMi Studio Group preserve the franchise’s combat principles and creature designs, while TiMi contributes its experience with free-to-play games and long-term live-service development. Whether the monetization model satisfies longtime fans remains to be seen, but the promise of free story access gives players a clear starting point.
