Palworld and Valheim Lead Steam’s Best-Rated 2026 Games as Six Early Access Graduates Enter the Top 10

Early Access remains one of the most debated ways to release a game, but Steam’s best-rated releases of 2026 provide another argument for the model. According to Steam250, six of the platform’s current top 10 highest-rated games of the year are titles that spent time in Early Access before reaching their full 1.0 launches.

The list is led by Palworld and Valheim, which occupy the first two positions in Steam250’s current Best of 2026 ranking. Other Early Access graduates in the top 10 include TCG Card Shop Simulator, Fields of Mistria, Timberborn, and Scrap Mechanic.

Palworld and Valheim Lead Steam’s 2026 Rankings

Steam250 currently gives Palworld a 9.73 score and Valheim a 9.71 score in its 2026 rankings. They sit ahead of major releases such as Resident Evil Requiem and PRAGMATA, showing that established franchises are not automatically dominating the platform’s user-driven ratings.

Fields of Mistria is another notable example. The farming RPG currently holds a 9.44 rating from more than 34,000 reviews on Steam250’s tracking, while Timberborn sits at 9.41 with more than 41,000 reviews.

The numbers are particularly interesting because these games had already spent significant portions of their development lives in front of players before their full releases.

Steam’s Early Access system has obvious risks. Players are effectively buying into an unfinished product, and there is always a possibility that development slows, changes direction, or fails to deliver on the original vision.

However, the 2026 rankings also demonstrate why developers continue using the model. Long-term access gives studios an opportunity to collect feedback from a committed player base and make changes throughout development instead of waiting until after launch.

Steam250’s methodology also attempts to account for review volume rather than allowing games with only a small number of positive reviews to dominate the rankings. That makes the presence of six Early Access graduates in the top 10 particularly notable, even though Steam250’s rankings should not be treated as an objective measurement of game quality.

For developers, the results offer a compelling example of how years of iteration can eventually translate into a highly rated 1.0 release. For players, however, the success of games such as Palworld, Valheim, Fields of Mistria, and Timberborn does not eliminate the risks that come with buying into Early Access.

Instead, Steam’s 2026 rankings suggest that Early Access can work extremely well when developers use the extended development period to meaningfully improve their games before the final launch.
