With the recent conclusion of the HBO miniseries based upon the Baltimore Police Department’s Gun Task Force many want to know: Is We Own This City A True Story? Well, the short answer is Yes. For the long answer, read our post and find out about the real deal behind this amazing story of institutional corruption in United States Law Enforcement.
We Own This City was produced by the same people that brought us another great production, The Wire. That’s right, George Pelecanos and David Simon teamed up again. And they called some actors from the previous series to star here. Now, without further ado, let’s examine the real facts of “We Own This City”.
Is We Own This City A True Story?
We Own This City is a crime drama set in Baltimore about the rise and fall of a police task force. That task force is responsible for tracking illegal firearm traffic, but it is rife with corruption. Furthermore, it is based on true events that were summarized by a journalist named Justin Fenton in a book called “We Own This City,” which inspired the producers to name HBO’s limited series. Furthermore, Justin Fenton is a reporter for “The Baltimore Sun” who investigated the corruption scandal before writing the book.
From such a great story, David Simon and George Pelecanos teamed up and decided to bring HBO’s cameras once again —as they did with the Wire a few years ago— to Baltimore, this time to bring a story —a true story— about crime, corruption and institutional followups in a moment where the United States openly questions how Law Enforcement polices their inner cities. The acting is impeccable and the story is solid.
If you haven’t seen this show, and enjoy crime procedural series, then “We Own This City” is definitely for you as it follows the same vein as the Wire and has the same quality that HBO only knows how to deliver.
What Happened To The Police Officers From The GTTF?
The show chronicles the rise and fall of officers on what was once an elite squad. If you say the letters GTTF in Baltimore, most people know exactly what you’re talking about. After HBO’s new series we own the city. Many more people will too. It’s a scandal that came to light in 2017 Rocking the city and police department. A total of eight officers on the BPD elite gun trace Task Force were convicted for racketeering, robbery, extortion, and overtime fraud.
The officers admitted to flaunting and abusing their power for almost 10 years. Using their badges to commit crimes. They sold drugs and money. Members pled guilty to robbing citizens during Street and traffic stops, making illegal searches in people’s homes, planting evidence, and providing false affidavits and police reports to further their crimes. In some cases, the group made arrests based on bogus charges that resulted in people being sent to jail for years.
Now they’re the ones serving time. Furthermore, the eight GTF members were sentenced to a combined 112 years in prison. Two of the eight have since served their time and are now on supervised release.
