The Plot of Stairway to Heaven
The evil stepmother device is used a lot here. When Han Jung Suh loses her mother to eye cancer, her father marries a volatile actress who brings her two children with her – Tae Hwa and abrasive daughter Yoo Ri. Tae Hwa is neglected and Jung Suh is abused at the hands of her stepmother. Instead of telling her father, Jung Suh silently bears all the abuse. Cha Song Joo is the long-time best friend of Jung Suh who bonded together over the deaths of their parents, and they were supposed to go to the United States together but Jung Suh’s stepmother nixed the idea and instead is setting her wiles on Song Joo since he is rich.
Tae Hwa develops a crush on Jung Suh, and they grow up together going to the mall and they ride the carousel together. Skipping ahead many years, we see that Song Joo is able to return to Korea and when Jung Suh comes to know about this, she rushes to meet him. But as she is crossing the street, Yoo Ri hits her. Jung Suh has amnesia and also Yoo Ri swaps her identity.
Yoo Ri takes her to her biological father’s house and changes her name to Kim Ji Soo. At the same time, Cha Song Joo also changes his name to Han Chul Soo. Both Yoo Ri and Tae Hwa hope that both these childhood sweethearts do not meet and live their lives without each other.
But everything is set into motion when Yoo Ri is able to rope Song Joo into an engagement with her. But Song Joo is unable to forget his first love, so he goes to the carousel where they used to go, and he finds Jung Suh! But since Jung Suh does not remember anything, Song Joo is able to remind her of things when Yoo Ri almost hits her with her car.
