GTA 6 Online May Not Launch Until 2027 or 2028 as Rockstar Remains Silent on Multiplayer Plans

Rockstar has not announced a release window for GTA 6 Online, while Forbes journalist Paul Tassi believes the multiplayer experience could arrive one or two years after GTA 6 launches.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, but Rockstar has yet to reveal when players will be able to access its eventual online component. The silence is particularly notable because GTA Online became one of the most important parts of Grand Theft Auto 5 following its launch in 2013.

That lack of information has prompted speculation that Rockstar could be planning a significantly longer gap between GTA 6 and GTA 6 Online. While there is no confirmed release window, one prominent industry analysis suggests fans may have to wait considerably longer than they did for the previous game’s multiplayer mode.

GTA 6 Online May Not Launch Shortly After the Main Game

In a recent analysis for Forbes, journalist Paul Tassi examined Rockstar’s silence surrounding the multiplayer component. Tassi argues that the most likely scenario is that GTA 6 Online could be one or two years away from release, rather than arriving just weeks after the main game.

That would represent a major departure from GTA 5. Rockstar released GTA 5 on September 17, 2013, before launching GTA Online roughly two weeks later. This time, however, Rockstar’s official marketing has remained focused entirely on the single-player game and its characters, Jason and Lucia.

Rockstar’s own announcements currently describe Grand Theft Auto 6 as a single-player experience coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. The developer has not announced GTA 6 Online or provided details about its multiplayer plans.

There is a practical reason Rockstar could choose to delay the online component. GTA Online remains an exceptionally successful live-service game more than a decade after its debut, giving Rockstar little reason to immediately abandon its existing player base while GTA 6 establishes itself. Tassi argues that Rockstar could allow the two games to coexist before eventually shifting players toward a new online ecosystem.

For now, the reported one-to-two-year timeframe remains speculation rather than confirmed information. Rockstar could announce GTA 6 Online sooner, but its continued silence makes a launch immediately after GTA 6 increasingly difficult to predict.
