Thanks to dramas like Alchemy of Souls & horror series like All of Us Are Dead, Korean television has become increasingly popular over the years. Not to mention Gannibal, a Television show based on Massaki Nimomiya’s novel of the same name, the two works are among several that have added to the curiosity surrounding 2022.
At some point in their life, everybody has had the uncomfortably common thought: what would people taste like? Although it is a basic matter, the banned practice of cannibalism has historically been a cause of dispute.
Most people will not tolerate gnawing on someone’s leg. It’s a sickening concept, and while protagonists like Hannibal Lecter portray it as opulent and sophisticated, it is still something most individuals will never have to face.
While we don’t understand whether humans taste pork or chicken, Gannibal, Hulu’s latest live-action Japanese suspenseful thriller, will investigate the consequences of cannibalism in the lonely woodland community.
Gannibal will revamp Masaaki Ninomiya’s titular anime series, which premiered in early 2020, for the mainstream world. Here’s what we understand so far about the probable first season finale of the show, which has past episodes available on Hulu.
Gannibal: A quick recap
After causing a major commotion, Daigo Agawa, a cop, decides to move his wife, Yuki & child Mashiro to the remote mountain village of Kuge. Despite the mysterious disappearance of a military soldier stationed there, it looks to be the ideal location for the family to rehabilitate from their ordeal. The residents rely on cypress timber for a living, and the village lives on it.
The Goto household, who owns the bulk of the hamlet, runs the whole operation. One day, the body of an elderly woman is uncovered on the hills. The Gotos claim she was bitten by a bear, but Daigo discovers a mortal puncture wound on her arm. Daigo begins to suspect that there is something amiss with the community.
Agawa sees unusual happenings in the village, which eventually lead to violence and numerous head blows. As the trailer ends, Agawa looks over his back to see a decrepit man with a sallow grey complexion who seems to be a hollow shell compared to the healthy citizens of the hamlet.
It’s impossible to tell if the haggard man is a corpse, a cannibal, or something entirely different; all we know is that he carries a chip on his shoulder. The person jerks back and strikes a scythe at Agawa’s head just when the title sequence is about to fall. Someone could be seen staring blankly at the exhausted man as he drags a comatose Agawa up a hill.
Rather than being a gruesome horror series, it looks to lean more strongly toward the thriller genre, taking the spectator on an exciting rollercoaster as Kuge’s mysteries are slowly revealed. As the series progresses, there will be a lot to dig into, from the enigma of the Goto household and their grip over the village to the reason the haggard person looks and behaves the way the guy does.
Agawa Daigo is now entrusted with becoming Chuzai of Kyokamura while also solving the enigma of his immediate predecessor’s disappearance. During this surgery, he discovers the startling truth about Hamlet. A cannibalistic practice that is still practiced in the town today.
Despite its horrifying fundamental idea, Gannibal is primarily a character-driven story. You’ll meet a large number of fascinating folks. Some are stronger than others, but they all have flaws. Chuzai, the strong young man, was among them.
