Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Episode 278 Review
Three more of Ouga’s hardships were addressed in episode 278, “Musical Chairs,” which provided a platform for a variety of people to voice their hopes for conquering the difficulties that lie ahead. She stated that she would alter her hair color as soon as she was free.
Boruto expressed his desire to one day become a great ninja like his Master Sasuke. Apparently, Shamo gave his grandmother a very hard time and he wanted to make amends. Kiseru wanted to visit the hot springs he used to visit with his grandfather. Batta and Namua had more “layered” motivations.
During the interview, Rokuro learned that Namua had a tattoo on his right arm that was unique to convicted murderers. We were shown a flashback of Namua who used to cross a lot of lines to get what he wanted, including killing and stealing from numerous people.
In spite of this, as he continued stealing and killing, he experienced an existential crisis that led him to believe that he would die. Because of his paranoia, Namua could not even sleep. As Namua has already shared his background and motivations, I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s the one to be killed next. An unexpected encounter with a priest assisted him in distancing himself from worldly desires and committing himself to asceticism.
Batta, on the other hand, had a very materialistic goal—to own a private island—which did not align with the shame she was feeling for having killed two innocent people during her last experiment. Because of this, I appreciated how the writers revealed Batta’s true intentions and the backstory that involved wealthy people taking control of the island she was born on to make a resort for her.
Rich people evicting natives from their houses is a genuine issue. Local traditions and practices are not respected even after resorts are developed. Batta wanted to collect as much money as possible to regain control of the island. The episode ended with Batta revealing something huge to Boruto (which I’ll explain later). Just like Namua, I will be amazed if she survives Ouga’s defeat.
Eight contestants were trapped in an empty cylindrical-type room with a slowly falling ceiling for the third experiment, known as ‘Pressure’. The reveal of three safe spots reminded me of the Saw film series. They had to figure out how to escape or they would die. As a result of Ouuga’s plan to kill the eight contestants, only three would be able to secure hiding spots.
Boruto had an alternative plan, of course. It was Boruto who realized the floor wasn’t very thick after using a Water-Style Jutsu to extinguish Kiseru’s flame arrows that it was not very thick as the water managed to drain out. The ceiling continued to fall as Shamo tried to slow it down. Boruto, Kiseru, and Namua all broke the floor at the same time.
