Game Freak’s upcoming Pokémon Winds and Waves has the potential to become one of the biggest turning points in the franchise’s history. The Generation 10 Pokémon games are being built exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, promising a larger world, new exploration systems, and a more ambitious approach to the long-running series.

However, the recent release of Beast of Reincarnation, Game Freak’s first major project outside the Pokémon formula in years, has created uncertainty among some fans. The action RPG was expected to demonstrate that the developer had expanded its technical and creative abilities, but mixed reviews have raised questions about whether those improvements will translate into the next Pokémon generation.

Beast of Reincarnation Shows Game Freak’s Ambition but Highlights Execution Problems

Beast of Reincarnation immediately attracted attention because it was unlike anything Game Freak had previously developed. Instead of a colorful creature-collecting adventure, the game takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of Japan in the year 4026, following protagonist Emma and her canine companion Koo as they navigate a world damaged by a mysterious disaster known as the Blight.

The project appeared to signal that Game Freak was willing to experiment with new genres and more mature storytelling. Its darker setting, action-focused combat, and exploration mechanics suggested that the studio could be developing skills that would eventually benefit Pokémon.

According to reviews, Beast of Reincarnation received praise for its atmosphere, visual direction, and the bond between Emma and Koo. However, critics also highlighted issues including repetitive combat encounters, limited enemy variety, underdeveloped storytelling, and a lack of depth in several gameplay systems.

These problems do not necessarily make Beast of Reincarnation a failure, but they have raised concerns about whether Game Freak can consistently deliver on ambitious ideas.

Pokémon Winds and Waves Must Avoid the Same Design Problems

The expectations surrounding Pokémon Winds and Waves are much higher because the games represent the next major generation of the franchise. Following Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s transition into an open-world structure, Generation 10 is expected to push exploration further with new environments, larger ecosystems, and a world designed around natural elements.

The Switch 2 hardware gives Game Freak more opportunities to create a technically impressive Pokémon experience. A larger ocean, island-based exploration, and dynamic environments could help the series evolve beyond its traditional structure.

However, simply adding more features will not be enough. Beast of Reincarnation demonstrates that ambitious ideas need strong execution to make a lasting impact. A larger world filled with systems only works if those mechanics connect naturally and create meaningful gameplay experiences.

Pokémon has always had strong foundations, particularly its battle system and creature designs, but recent entries have faced criticism for technical issues and underdeveloped open-world elements. Winds and Waves will need to prove that Game Freak can combine its creativity with stronger execution.

Game Freak Still Has Time to Deliver Pokémon’s Next Evolution

Despite concerns following Beast of Reincarnation, Pokémon Winds and Waves still has reasons for fans to remain hopeful. The games are being developed specifically for Nintendo Switch 2, allowing Game Freak to work with more powerful hardware and potentially create a more polished experience.

The upcoming titles could become a major step forward if the developer focuses on depth rather than simply expanding the size of the world. Players are looking for meaningful exploration, stronger storytelling, and a Pokémon world that feels alive rather than just larger.

Beast of Reincarnation shows that Game Freak is willing to experiment, which is an encouraging sign. However, Pokémon Winds and Waves will ultimately determine whether those experiments have helped the studio evolve or whether the same development challenges remain.
