Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! is a shounen manga based on the rom-com genre with a mixture of harem and gyaru themes. Manga and anime are typically set in Japan’s capital cities of Tokyo or Kyoto, but we rarely see stories set in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost and very scenic region. As a result, this series has a lot to offer in that regard.
The author and illustrator of this series are Kai Ikada. It has been published in the Shonen Jump Plus magazine since September 2019, consisting of nine volumes as of November 2022. If you are a keen follower of this series, then you probably know that there is going to be an anime adaptation that will be released this year, in 2023.
Okay, so let’s dive in and give you a brief intro about the main character and their slice of life. So as we said, the story takes place in Hokkaido, as even the title mentions. The male lead character, Tsubasa Shiki, is a sixteen-year-old high school boy who just relocated to a place called Kitami City due to his family’s circumstances. And his journey begins from there.
It’s winter, the place is all covered in snow, and the temperature is negative eight. He was excited and wanted to explore the place, so he got off the taxi way ahead of his home, but he soon realized that there was no single car and the place was all quiet, and above all, he was freezing to death.
Right then, this beautiful and adorable young lady appeared with minimal clothes—mainly bare legs and no gloves in this deadly weather. Tsubasa had no choice but to ask her for directions and decided to go to his house on foot, but she said that it might take three hours to reach her and that there wouldn’t be any taxis available at such a place.
Tsubasa realized that he had made the biggest mistake by dropping off the taxi in such a condition. Kitami is a large city, but in this weather, travel is unlikely, so he decides to wait for her until her bus arrives. He could easily judge what Hokkaido’s girls are like by her cuteness. She was talkative and totally interested in Tsubasa. Her name was Minami Fuyuki, the female lead character.
So they were in the same school and were the same age, and they soon expected to see each other in school. The next day, Tsubasa gave an introduction to the class and was searching for her, but he didn’t find her because she was late “again.”
Tsubasa was shocked to find out that she was really in her class, but he was restraining himself from her cuteness because she was not his type. Later, when she started talking to him by his first name and he was totally flustered, which drew him even more toward her,

This chapter was all about a typical Hokkaido ball game called “Kataki,” and Tsubasa and Minami’s younger sister Momoko Fuyuki, playing together with other kids. Minami had to take extra classes after school because she performed badly on a quiz.
While returning, she met them in the field. She was happy that he played with her sister and took care of her. But it’s wild how they can play outside when it’s so cold. The two talked about whether they liked kids; as for Tsubasa, since he can swim and play the piano, he has often taught elementary schoolers. So he likes kids, and Minami thinks he can be a good school teacher in the future.
He has tutored Minami before, but he has never thought of becoming a teacher. After all, it could be a good fit for him, although he would be popular with girls if he became one, which makes Minami jealous. Before the conversation moved forward, the ball that the kids were playing interrupted them.
Minami suggested to Tsubasa that they should study together before the exams. He turned her down for group study in the first year’s end-of-term tests, but now he wants to make it up to her. So they are planning to study together starting the next day.
On their way, they looked up, and it was snowing. It was Tsubasa’s second winter in Hokkaido, but the first snowfall of the year began with Minami Fuyuki again, and he wished that he could witness every winter with her.
