Sophie Ellis-Bextor is a British singer and songwriter who began her career in the music industry in 1997 as the lead singer of the indie rock band Theaudience. After the band broke up in 1999, she went on to have a successful solo career in the early 2000s.

Her music blends mainstream pop, disco, nu-disco, and 1980s electronic styles. Over her career, she has released six studio albums, two compilation albums, one video album, 27 music videos, one EP, 34 singles, and one remix album, all listed below. She has also won several awards and toured nationally and internationally to promote her albums, as detailed below.

In addition to her music career, she is an author. She published her first book, Spinning Plates: Thoughts on Men, Music, and Motherhood, on October 7, 2021. You can read the article below to learn more about her.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s Early Life

Sophie Ellis-Bextor was born in 1979 to her parents, and her full name is Sophie Michelle Ellis-Bextor. She is 43 years old and celebrates her birthday on April 10.

She was born in Hounslow, London, England, but now lives in Chiswick, West London. She is British and of White ethnicity. Her zodiac sign is Aries, and she is non-religious, identifying as a humanist.

Her parents are Robin Bextor, a film producer and director, and Janet Ellis, a TV presenter. Sophie has five siblings—two from her mother’s remarriage and three from her father’s remarriage.

These siblings are Jackson Ellis-Leach (half-brother), Martha Rose Ellis-Leach (half-sister), Dulce Bextor (half-sister), Maisy (half-sister), and Bertie Bextor (half-brother).

For her education, Sophie attended St Stephen’s School in Twickenham, London, before going on to Godolphin and Latymer Private School in Hammersmith, West London, where she took her A-level exams (the equivalent of grade 12). After that, she enrolled at Queen Mary Westfield University, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in English and Drama.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s Personal Life

Sophie Ellis-Bextor is happily married to her long-time partner, Richard Jones. They first met in 2002 when Sophie was auditioning musicians for her Read my Lips tour.

While working together, they became close friends, and their friendship eventually turned into love. They started dating in 2003. During their relationship, Sophie became pregnant, and both her parents and Richard were very supportive.

Richard even took her to Barcelona, Spain, to propose to her as a surprise. The couple then got married in a private ceremony in Italy in June 2005, when their first child was old enough to attend the event.

Together, they have five children: Sonny Jones, Kit Valentine Jones, Ray Holiday Jones, Jesse Jones, and Mickey Jones. The couple currently enjoys a happy life with their children.

Who is Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s husband Richard Jones?

Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s husband is Richard Jones, a bass player for the British rock band The Feeling. Richard, 44, was born in East Sussex and attended The BRIT School in Croydon.

The couple first met during Sophie’s 2002 tour for her album Read My Lips. They got married in Italy in 2005.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor and her husband Richard Jones have shared the sweet story of how they met more than 20 years ago, comparing it to ‘an American movie.’

The couple, who married in 2005, met three years earlier when Richard auditioned to tour as part of Sophie’s band and got the job.

Remembering their time together on tour, Richard said there was ‘an electricity’ between them. He admitted, “I was like, wow, look at this ethereal, beautiful woman.”

Even though they met in 2002, Sophie and Richard remained friends for a while and didn’t start a romantic relationship until later.

In an interview with The Guardian, the couple looked back on their journey to love after meeting at auditions. Sophie laughed as she recalled the first thing she said to Richard was “nice amp,” referring to his sound equipment.

Though it wasn’t a very romantic comment, Richard now has that exact phrase as a neon wall light in his studio.

At the time they met, both Sophie and Richard were in other relationships. Richard shared that his first impression of Sophie was: “Wow, look at this ethereal, beautiful woman that is way more beautiful in real life than I expected.”

Sophie and Richard stayed close friends while touring together, and they both felt a ‘connection’ as their feelings shifted from friendship to romance.

“There was a sort of electricity, something in the air. It was weird. It was like ‘Oh – and you’re both on the same page,'” said Richard.

They then ended their previous relationships before meeting up again in London. Sophie added, “It was like in an American movie. We wondered if we would feel the same and it was exactly the same.”

Where does Sophie live?

The singer is married to Richard Jones, the bassist of The Feeling, and they live in a lively home in West London. They have five children: Sonny, Kit, Ray, Jesse, and Mickey.

Their oldest son, Sonny, who is 20, has moved out of their stylish home and now lives with his grandmother, Janet Ellis. He told The Times in June: “I think it got to the point, back home, where I needed more space. Three of my brothers shared a room.

The only time the house got quiet was when everyone was in bed. So when I was coming to the end of school, my grandmother asked if I wanted to move in. I’ve been coming here all my life, so it’s always felt like a second home anyway.”

“It hasn’t been that much of a change, really. Plus, my parents and brothers visit all the time,” he added.

Talking about his future plans, Sonny said: “I’m not sure how long I’ll stay here. If I did move out, I would want it to be somewhere nice, and that would be expensive. But I think if I did leave, I’d miss the home comforts. I would also miss my grandmother. We’ve always been close, but we’re closer than ever now.”

Their first son, Sonny, is now 19 and was born early in their relationship. They then had four more boys: Kit, 15, Ray, 11, Jesse, nine, and their youngest, Mickey, who is four.

Talking about her large family, she said: “Five of anything is a lot. I love the chaos of big family life luckily. There are always things happening. One is running another has brought four friends over.”

“When I was little I was an only child until I was 8. Then my brother Jackson was born and I was absolutely obsessed with him and I think that sowed the seed.”

“He was a fresh start and that’s something that’s hardwired in me. Those babies are good.”

What is Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s net worth in 2025?

Sophie Ellis-Bextor is believed to have a net worth of £8 million or $10.1 million in 2025.

Her net worth in 2025 comes from her music career and the different tours she has done.
