So, it will be right to say that although the plot of the movie is fictional, it is inspired by some real-life case of an Uber driver who went on a murder rampage. To dissect it further, the story of the movie was co-written by its director Eugene Kotlyarenko alongside Gene McHugh.
As per Kotlyarenko, the script of the movie has been inspired by a real-life case of an Uber driver who went on a killing spree. The whole thing about the same surfaced in the Q&A session at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival after the movie’s premiere. In there, the writer and director of the show didn’t disclose the case that inspired the plot but made it clear that although the movie was fictional, its roots were deep down in a real incident.
After this event, all the fans out there began digging up the internet to find more about the same. Many speculations came up, and it was brought up that maybe the movie was inspired by the case of a Michigan Uber driver named Jason Dalton. In the year 2016, he went on a killing spree and murdered six people in Kalamazoo.
He was caught and pleaded guilty to all charges and hence was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2019.

Moreover, as per the movie’s synopsis, the story was about a social media-obsessed rideshare driver who, in a thirst to get viral, live-streamed himself, killing or murdering the passengers who booked his cab. It was released on January 24, 2020, at the Sundance Film Festival. On August 14, 2020, the movie was released in theatres in the US and on VOD.
After gathering huge popularity, it was released on DVD and Blu-ray on October 20, 2020. It was also available on Hulu, and by May 2022, it was accessible on many online streaming platforms like Apple TV.
