If you’re unfamiliar with Grown-ish, it’s a teen dramedy developed by Larry Wilmore and Kenya Barris starring Dara Shahidi, Trevor Cole, and Devon Jackson, now on its fifth season with a powerful story. So let’s take a look at last week’s episode to see what went down!
Grown-Ish Season 5 Episode 4 Recap
Junior is thinking about joining the exclusive campus fraternity Gamma Psi Delta. After his experience with the Crest, he is determined to try it before committing. The Gamma Psi Delta guys don’t mind that Junior is nerdy or that he is a momma’s boy. At Aaron’s apartment, Doug makes fun of him while he takes sexy pictures for Zoe. To Doug’s delight, Junior shows up and says he wants to join Gamma. Doug assures Aaron that Gamma is a brotherhood even though they gave him a brand even though he is skeptical of fraternities.
Doug explains the details of pledging Gamma to Junior when Zoe calls Aaron. He exhorts Junior to take charge and advises him to try to assist the brothers in coming up with a routine for the upcoming comedy show. He contacts people from his former employer and arranges for Malik Miles to perform.
TikTok Issues
To show Junior Aaron’s TikTok tirade against the department chairs at Cal U, Zoe texts him. Aaron criticizes the problematic hiring practices at Cal U in it, and his TikTok becomes famous. Everyone is soon using the sound at Cal U to call out the school and try to get seats in Aaron’s class.
Attraction Impossibility
While awaiting her interview for Director of Strategy for the Social Justice Society, Kiela encounters Brandon elsewhere. Both are taken aback when they run into each other at the interview, but Brandon is assured of working with the president. Although she tries to appear calm, Kiela is anxious. Although Brandon and Kiela express completely different opinions in their interviews, the interviewer designates them as co-directors.
Following the interview, Kiela learns Junior has convinced Malik Miles to attend California University. She tells him indignantly that he cannot invite a well-known misogynist to speak on campus. Years ago, Malik Miles instructed the audience to grab a woman’s wig from his performance and hold it over her head as they laughed at her. Annika argues that Malik wasn’t initially responsible for the wig snatching, despite Kiela’s opinion to the contrary.
Junior pledges to communicate with the Gammas. Aaron receives angry and stern emails from the department heads who are upset that he used their images without their permission, while Zoe calls to congratulate him on his Tik Tok. He should try to get to know and win over the other teaching heads, advises Zoe.
Stupidity
When Junior visits his Gamma friend Mike’s house, Mike can easily talk Junior down about Malik. Junior agrees that he can’t join Gamma if he’s so quick to turn on one of his own. Mike persuades him that the world simply wants to hold another Black man down. He decides and texts it to Kiela. Indignant that Junior gave in, Kiela swears to Brandon that she will make an effort to stop the performance. Mike and the other brothers appreciate that Junior brought Malik to Cal U, but Kiela disrupts the event and chants “shut it down” with other students.
Kiela attempts to shame Junior into canceling the comedy show before the performance. Junior asks Kiela to leave, but Brandon follows her. Junior is shocked when a student orders him to “get the bitches out of there.” Junior abruptly ends the comedy show out of frustration. Brandon is impressed by Kiela’s ability to end the protest. The two argue passionately about how to effect change when they discuss Cal U’s climate change initiative. In the deserted hallway, they embrace deeply.
Employment Issues
Even though he doesn’t regret it, Junior later gets up in front of the Gamma’s and apologizes for postponing the event. He is still asked to pledge by the Gammas, who also remind him that brotherhood is about more than just blind loyalty. All but Mike, who informs Junior that he isn’t at all Gamma material. Aaron tries to join the other department heads for drinks, but he gets distracted by thoughts of workplace slights and decides to stay home.
