The sitcom Ugly Betty debuted in 2006 and ran till 2010 for four seasons. When ABC informed the show’s creator about their plan to cancel it, the network decreased the number of episodes from 22 to 20.
Ugly Betty is a dramatic comedy sitcom that follows the life of Betty Suarez, a girl in her early 20s. Betty is judged for her poor style, dressing sense, and braces on her teeth. Well, that sounds more like any teenager! However, she gets a big breakthrough in the fashion industry. Ironic. The fun follows after that.
Why was Ugly Betty canceled?
The series cancellation news shocked the fans, who were excited about Betty’s makeover, which was shown in the last few episodes. Though the plot of Ugly Betty was getting better and better, the ratings of shows were falling.
The most probable reason why ABC made decided to cancel the series was its decreasing ratings season after season. Not only Ugly Betty’s ratings were troubling, but also, the viewership was decreasing considerably. The viewership fell from 8.3 million to 5.3 million after 3rd season. Now, that’s a big difference!
After considering the sitcom’s appealing numbers, the revelation is surprising, especially knowing the plot is improving. We could have finally seen a creative resurgence in our favorite character-Betty Suarez.
What is Ugly Betty about?
Ugly Betty is a comedy show adapted from the Columbian series Yo soy Betty, la Fea. The story follows the life of Betty Suarez, who is in her 20s. America Ferrera plays the role of Betty Suarez.
Betty Suarez is a charming but dowdy woman who dreams of operating her fashion magazine. However, she has no idea about fashion or styling statements. However, Betty gets a job at a popular fashion magazine, MODE, as a personal assistant to the company’s editor, Chief Daniel Meade. It is later revealed that Betty got this job due to a lack of sex appeal and non-attractive looks. She got hired by Daniel’s father as bait so that Daniel couldn’t get attracted to her at any cost.
Since Daniel cannot fire her from his office, he always humiliates Betty so that she can resign herself. He wanted to hire an assistant of his choice, not his father’s. Eventually, when Betty resigns, he feels guilty about it, knowing Betty is working hard for the company. He ends up begging her to return, and they develop a friendship bond. The show continues with Betty’s challenges in office politics, self-love, and family.
