Eli Jorné’s Post-apocalyptic horror series, The Walking Dead: Dead City, has been airing as a sequel to The Walking Dead series since June 18th, 2023.
Revolving around the characters Maggie and Negan, Dead City takes us through Maggie’s journey to rescue her son Hershel from kidnappers. She has to unwillingly partner up with Negan to go back to Manhattan, which is where the kidnappers live.
With the post-apocalyptic city being filled with the infected to the brim, the pair have a hard time getting around in the top-secret base of The Croat, the kidnapper.
The Walking Dead franchise seems to be expanding every year, although not all of its series are turning out to be hits like the parent series. This spin-off, however, seems to be very promising and features the desolation and terror that resembles the original run.
The cast of The Walking Dead: Dead City includes Lauren Cohen in the role of Maggie Greene, Jeffrey Dean Morgan plays the role of Negan, and Gaius Charles portrays Perlie Armstrong. “The Croat,” who’s a former survivor from Croatia, is portrayed by Zeljko Ivanek. Other cast members are Mahina Napoleon, Logan Kim (Hershel), Michelle Hurd, Michael Anthony, and Steven Ogg (Guest).
Where Is The The Walking Dead: Dead City Filmed?
Filming for this spin-off began a few months after the show was originally announced by AMC. With New Jersey as its main filming spot, Dead City began shooting on July 19th, 2022, and it lasted up until October of that year.
New Jersey, US:
Although it may look like the crew went all the way to Manhattan for the scenes, producers behind Dead City have revealed that most of the scenes were shot only in New Jersey. The state is big enough to have all kinds of locations that would be appropriate for a post-apocalyptic series set in a city background.
The Meadowlands Arena, located in East Rutherford, NJ, was seen in some of the scenes of Dead City (episodes 3 and 4). Originally built to serve as a place for a basketball team, the large arena was abandoned sometime in 2015.
When NBC took up this place for being used as a venue for its shows, the arena was brought back to life and is still being used as a filming location for TV shows.
Places like the Franklin Lake and Port Newark were also featured in Dead City. Newark is a popular filming location, with iconic TV shows and movies like The Sopranos, Joker, and The Dark Knight Rises being filmed here. One of New Jersey’s tallest buildings, the National Newark Building, has been featured in Dead City as well.
What better place to feature in a horror series than the most haunted road in the world? We see the “Shades of Death Road” located in Warren County, NJ, in some shots of this TWD spin-off. Being about 7 miles in length, the road is infamous for being haunted by many ghosts and other creepy creatures. Asides from this, we see Newark Symphony Hall and Hoboken Terminal in this series too.
Dead City features some shots taken in Liberty State Park as well, and this is probably the easiest location we can figure out throughout the series. These places in NJ are made to look like Manhattan by using minor CGI, although all of the walkers are usually real people.
The Walking Dead: Dead City: About The Show
Seeing two fan favorites from TWD come back with their own show was great news to many, but with the recent low-rated spin-offs, there were fears that this new spin-off may not meet the mark as well. However, with only a few episodes out, Dead City has managed to capture the interest of many old fans with its interesting plot and change of scenes.
With six new episodes, The Walking Dead Franchise is being brought back to life with this spin-off starring Lauren Cohen and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
At present, The Walking Dead: Dead City is available to watch at AMC Plus.
