Tai and Van Test Their Fate with a Dangerous Plan
In the final episode of Season 2, after Natalie’s (Juliette Lewis) tragic death, Lottie (Simone Kessell) says something eerie: “It’s pleased with us. You’ll see.”
In Season 3, Taissa (Tawny Cypress) remembers this unsettling statement and calls Lottie to ask her about it. Lottie, however, claims she does not remember saying those words. She quickly ends the conversation, leaving Tai frustrated and confused.
Later, Tai and Van (Lauren Ambrose) sit outside a café, discussing their next move. Van expresses doubts about their plan, calling it one of their worst ideas yet. Tai, however, insists that it will only be foolish if no one notices. She believes that if “It” chooses, their actions will be justified.
They purchase a deck of cards and pull out the Queen of Hearts, placing it on the ground before walking away. Their idea is simple—if someone picks up the card and takes it, they will see it as a sign.
A woman steps on the card first, and it sticks to her shoe. She removes it, disappointing Tai and Van. A little girl then picks it up, but her mother makes her drop it. Finally, a man notices the card, picks it up, and puts it in his pocket. Tai and Van exchanged shocked glances before deciding to follow him.
They quietly track him into his building and stop outside his apartment door. The door is unlocked, which Tai considers another sign. Van feels guilty about what they are about to do. Tai tells her that if they go through with it, they will have more time together.
Van hesitates, saying she wants more time but not like this. She asks Tai if they can simply appreciate the time they already have. Tai, though reluctant, agrees and tells Van to meet her at the park in an hour.
That night, Tai meets Van at the park and asks her to buy a pretzel. As teenager, Van had once told Tai she wanted to take her to New York, buy her a pretzel, and take her for a horse carriage ride. Tai has already arranged for the carriage, making the moment special.
However, when Van pays for the pretzels, Tai notices her trembling hands. Van tries to act as if it is just adrenaline, but Tai remains unconvinced. Instead of pressing the issue, she decides to enjoy their time together.
Shauna and Jeff Try to Balance Their Bad Luck
After the terrifying brake failure in the last episode, Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) and Jeff (Warren Kole) take their van to an auto shop. Shauna suspects that Misty (Christina Ricci) tampered with the brakes, but the mechanic tells them it was just a mechanical failure.
Jeff believes they are experiencing bad luck because of their past actions and decides to improve their karma. He donates items to charity, plans to find a missing cat that has been gone for two years, and signs them up for volunteer work. Their daughter Callie (Sarah Desjardins) refuses to join, leaving Jeff and Shauna to handle it.
However, Shauna does not realize that Jeff has signed them up to volunteer at the assisted living facility where Misty works. When Misty sees Shauna, she immediately confronts her.
Misty wanted an apology, but Shauna refused to admit she was wrong. Misty, now in charge of their volunteer work, assigns Shauna to making tapioca pudding, claiming it is a fair punishment. To Misty’s frustration, Shauna actually enjoyed the task.
Later, Misty confronts Shauna in the kitchen, demanding an apology. Shauna pretends to apologize but then says she does not even understand what she is apologizing for. This angers Misty so much that she imagines grabbing a knife and stabbing Shauna in the back. The vision fades, but it is clear that Misty is reaching her breaking point.
Shauna Is Trapped with a Ghost from Her Past
After Misty had stormed off, Shauna put food away in the walk-in freezer. She accidentally knocks over a container of frozen burger patties. As she cleans up, the door suddenly shuts behind her. At first, she thinks someone closed it by accident, but when she tries to open it, she realizes she is locked in. She pounds on the door, but no one responds.
As the temperature drops, Shauna panics. Then, she hears a familiar voice. Jackie (Ella Purnell) appears, sitting casually in the freezer, and says, “Nice one, Shipman.” Shauna watches in horror as Jackie laughs at her situation.
Jackie taunts her, suggesting that this is how she was always meant to die—frozen and left behind, just like Jackie herself. Shauna, overwhelmed by guilt, begs Jackie to leave her alone. Jackie, however, tells Shauna that she does not actually want her to go. She says Shauna still clings to the past because Jackie is the most interesting thing about her.
The hallucination ends when Randy (Jeff Holman), another volunteer, hears Shauna banging on the door and lets her out. Shauna immediately accused Misty of locking her inside, but the staff member inform her that Misty had already left for the day. Shauna suddenly starts believing that Jeff was right about their karma.
She decides to make things right by adopting a cat and bringing it to a family that lost theirs—despite knowing it is not the same cat. Jeff questions whether lying to them will actually improve their karma, but he admits that Shauna’s heart is in the right place.
Coach Ben Stands Trial for His Life
After being kidnapped in the last episode, Coach Ben returns to camp. The group quickly decides that he must be punished. Shauna (Sophie Nélisse) demands his execution, but Natalie believes he deserves a fair trial. She proposes that they hold a vote, requiring a two-thirds majority to decide his fate. Misty is chosen to defend him.
The trial is intense. Witnesses give their statements, and arguments fly back and forth. Tai pushes the idea that Coach burned down the cabin because he does not believe in the wilderness’s power. Misty counters, saying that anyone could have done it. She points out that the Coach had opportunities to harm them before but never did.
In the end, the group votes. At first, the decision is split, preventing a verdict. However, after multiple rounds of voting, more people start siding against Coach. Eventually, they reach a majority, and Natalie announces that Coach Ben has been found guilty.
A Shocking Tragedy Strikes Lottie
While Tai and the others are caught up in their plans, Lottie is barely seen throughout the episode. At the very end, Misty scrolls through an online forum and sees a post about a dead body. At the same time, Walter (Elijah Wood) sends her a message: “I heard about Lottie. Are you okay?”
Confused, Misty clicked the link. The body found is Lottie’s. The scene shifts, revealing Lottie lying at the bottom of a staircase, surrounded by candles. Her eyes are open, but she is motionless. She is dead.
Who killed her? That remains a mystery. But one thing is certain—the number of survivors is shrinking fast.
