We have a sad piece of news for Vampire Diaries fans. It’s the first time in more than a decade that television won’t have a Vampire Diaries-related show on air! The spin-off Legacies season five is a no-go. But why is Legacies canceled? After all, shows like Gotham Knights, Walker: Independence and The Winchesters got a renewal. But Legacies, Naomi, Charmed, and Dynasty were taken behind the barn and shot.
After reading our article, you will understand why The CW decided to pull the plug on this fan favorite. Moreover, you will have an idea of the reasoning behind the corporate view that the CW will have for the future as they are developing new material to compete with other networks. Now, without further ado, let’s take a look at the reason why The CW decided to pull the plug on this Vampire Diaries’ Universe spin-off, let’s begin!
What Was Legacies About?
Legacies premiered in 2018 and was an instant success with viewers. The series follows Hope Mikaelson, a descendent of the most powerful vampire, werewolf, and witch bloodlines; this bloodline unification allowed Hope to become the tribrid — The Vampire Diaries universe’s most influential and mystical monster.
Legacies follow Hope as she enters the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted, a safe sanctuary for supernatural creatures learning to control their skills and impulses. Throughout the show’s seasons, however, students of the Salvatore school are frequently shown fighting against mythical monsters such as Malivore in an attempt to defend the school, the town, and the people they love.
Why Is Legacies Canceled?
When a network decides to pull the plug on a show, they do it for various reasons. One of the most important ones is ratings. Take a look, season three averaged 760,000 viewers, but season 2 averaged a million viewers. And in the case of Legacies, these ratings were abysmal. Not enough to bring a compelling case for the network board to convince them for renewal. Quite the opposite.
Though the fans were loyal, the franchise didn’t capture enough new public. And business being business, they had to go. They were taking a slot that could compete with other networks. Simply put, Legacies was no Vampire Diaries. The parent show had an eight-season run, and the first spin-off had five.
Other Shows At The CW Are Also Getting The Axe
But Legacies isn’t the only show that’s getting shot behind the CW barn. The network and its parent (Warner Bros.) will be pulling the plug on a variety of other shows like the 4400 reboot, Roswell, Magnum P.I, Dynasty, Batwoman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and the Charmed reboot, all because of lazy scriptwriting, poor ratings, and simply because the networks have other things in mind regarding the slots that these shows occupy in television schedules. What will come next will be up to the networks during the next premiere season. We’ll keep an eye open and let you know!
Legacies Will Conclude In June
The last episode of the series, slated for broadcast on June 16, 2022, is the final goodbye in thirteen years of The Vampire Diaries’ history on television. For fans, it will be a sad moment. For haters, it will be fun and games. Moreover, we will see how social media grabs all the hashtags, and memes will come and go. But Mystic Falls will have its final say on June 16. The same Mystic falls that say Elena stumbled upon Stefan and where Damon expressed his love for Elena or where Bonnie became the witch. So many memories!
