As fall ends and winter is upon us, it’s the time of the year again for another Heartland season. Season 15 brought us a sense of yearly joy, as we put season 14 in the back mirror with its somber tones. With Heartland, if you’ve seen it like me, it ain’t sunshine, unicorns, and rainbows, because we find ourselves with Ty, and well, Georgie.
But we must reflect on Georgie’s departure from the show as we also contemplate the melancholy of Ty’s death. Ty’s death gave Heartland a rather comfort for day-to-day life. Still, that void, that vacant spot, is palpable, and we have spent the past year dealing with the loss of this dude.
With Amy and Ty’s love story, a swoon-worthy one within the show, you tend to get distracted —and attached— to characters like Georgie. So, let us explore how her heartbreaking story, of maternal abandonment and the finding of refuge in Heartland unfolds. Remember when Peter and Lou adopted her? That was touching because she found a family.
What Was Georgie’s Story Like In Heartland?
Georgie’s character story development in Heartland kicks off with her being an abandoned child, her mom left her, and she felt a sentimental void. Then Lou and Peter adopt her, and Georgie finds a home in Heartland Ranch. She gets used to the dynamics and eventually becomes a formal member of the family.
From a quiet little girl, we see her, episode after another, grow into a confident young woman who develops a passion for horse breeding and general work in the Heartland ranch. Then, she meets Quinn, the kind of “boy-from-next-door,” and her character story arc develops and expands.
With season fifteen, we were left wondering what the hell happened to Georgie. Since she didn’t show up in several episodes, we had no clue of her whereabouts.
Why Did Georgie Leave Heartland?
Since in Season 15, we saw very little of Georgie, on an episode, we learn from Lou that Georgie is in Florida preparing for the Olympic Games. The fact that she’s there gives us a sense of temporary relief. Remember that in shows like Heartland, supporting characters get some screen time here and there. It’s because the scriptwriters focus on other aspects of the story.
Now, that’s not enough of an explanation; that’s just the backstory of her character and what the scriptwriters and production team chose to do with her. Will Georgie return to Heartland Ranch, and if so, is she returning as an Olympic medalist? Or did she fail to make it to the Olympics? It’s all up for grabs, and that depends on where the scriptwriters want to take her character story arc.
Ty & Amy
Since Amy and Ty’s romantic relationship took the backseat of the storytelling in Heartland, it seems as though the series is having a bit of a problem story-wise. Scriptwriters must deal with the challenge of finding a suitable replacement for this.
Since Lisa and Jack’s romance arc is rather stable, Tim’s relationships are a rollercoaster, and Lou is having her own thing, it seemed as if Georgie and Quinn were sort of the main focus of the narrative, but with Georgie gone to Florida for the Olympics, the showrunners, the scriptwriters seemed to have overlooked how this story arc’s potential could be put on screen to keep us looking. So, we’re left pondering just WTF is going to happen next in Heartland’s romance narratives.
Heartland Enters Season 16 Without Much Substance
Finding a romance in a show like Heartland to which we can follow is a challenge for the showrunners, I’ve stated it earlier and I’ll say it again. Ty and Amy brought elements to this show that are a bit tough act to follow. So, they must find a new couple that can strike a chord with the audience in the same way as the other ones I described above.
This brings us to Quinn and Amy. Amy’s character, relationship, and age with Quinn make her a rather ideal candidate for a main role, one that puts in some innovation to what Heartland needs to keep the audience tuning in.
Now, that doesn’t depend on us, it depends on the scriptwriters and showrunners. Bear in mind that there’s an actor’s and screenwriter’s strike unfolding and while they’re being solved, that puts a dent in how the production team can create a story that will resonate with us as an audience.
