Todd Phillips’ most awaited film, Joker: Folie à Deux, has managed to create quite the buzz in the entertainment world not just because of its star-studded cast, but also because the movie will supposedly be a musical starring none other than Mother Monster herself.
The original stand-alone film was released in 2019 and became one of the best movies Todd Phillips had ever created. It collected almost 1 billion through the box office and ended up attracting many awards, including the prestigious Academy Award. When it was first revealed, fans of the DC universe didn’t understand the need for another Joker when the likes of Heath Ledger‘s Joker already existed.
It was only when the movie finally came out that people started loving the new darker and more realistic take on the DC villain, accompanied by Joaquin Phoenix‘s flawless portrayal. Neither the producers nor the cast was sure that the original movie would ever have a sequel, but now, almost four years later, the rumors are finally true, and the second part of Joker will premiere on October 4th, 2024.
In October 2019, Joaquin did express his thoughts on working on a sequel for Joker, and he reacted positively, saying he would love to explore the possibilities the new Joker could have. It was in June of 2022 that Todd announced that he was working on a script for Joker 2, with Scott Silver being involved in it as well. A few months later, it was revealed that it would most likely be a musical, which is perfect since Lady Gaga would now be a part of the main cast.
Other cast members that will be part of Joker: Folie à Deux are Zazie Beetz (Sophie Dumond), Brendan Gleeson, Jacob Lofland, Harry Lawtey, and Catherine Keener. The role of the rest of the cast members has not been revealed yet, but since the movie will release next year, we might see the cast details being released in the coming months.
Joker 2: Where Will It Be Filmed?
Although not much is known about the DC movie, many fans were able to witness the cast of Joker 2 on the streets of NYC in April, which also happens to be the month when the filming was complete. This confirms that filming will most likely take place in similar locations as the first part. The filming of Joker: Folie à Deux began on December 10th, 2022, with Todd revealing the news through his Instagram. The locations that Joker 2 would most likely contain are:
The Bronx Stairs Return:
Popularized excessively by the first movie, the stairs located between two buildings became a source of attraction as soon as Joker was released in theatres. Before being the location of the iconic scene, the Bronx stairs were mostly abandoned and people would rarely use that passage to go around the city. Fans were recently able to spot Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix back in Anderson Ave, where they were shooting a few scenes from Folie à Deux.

While filming the original movie, the cast and producers had to go through constant disturbance from the paparazzi as there was no rule in place forbidding them from entering the filming location. Now that they’ve returned to the Bronx, they hopefully didn’t experience the same situation all over again.
New Jersey & Los Angeles
The crew might once again return to New Jersey to shoot the second film since most of the significant locations from the first film, including the Paramount Theatre, Wayne Hall, and the street scenes, were all filmed in Newark. Very few of the scenes will be filmed at the place in real-time since it is known that the second part has more CGI incorporation. Instead of New Jersey, we might see Los Angeles as the provider of the city background for Joker 2.
Essex County Isolation Hospital, New Jersey
The Arkham State Hospital will yet again be a part of the second film as it’s most likely that the plot will now center around the asylum much more than the first Joker. This is because Harley Quinn, who was originally Dr. Harleen Quinzel, meets Joker at the asylum in the form of his psychiatrist. It was revealed in March 2023 that the asylum scenes would likely be filmed at Essex County Isolation Hospital. This is different from the first part, which was filmed in Brooklyn with Metropolitan Hospital providing the interior for the asylum.
Until the next part releases, you can head over to Netflix or Prime Video to stream the first part of Joker.
