BBC’s one-of-a-kind comedy sitcom, Ghosts still stands as one of the best series that the platform has come out with in a while. Starring Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe, this 5 season long series is the kind of sitcom that gets you laughing at almost every minute of the episode. Now that the final season of Ghosts will be coming out in 2023, there’s much to look back on in the show.
Created by Mathew Baynton and Simon Farnaby and directed by Tom Kingsley, Ghosts was first released in the UK on 15th April 2019. Within no time, Ghosts became one of the most appreciated shows on the platform, mainly due to its interesting assortment of characters and an even more entertaining plot. This series also has an American adaptation of the same name, which has been airing since November 2019 on CBS.
With most of the reviews being positive for each season, Ghosts’ is regarded as one of the few shows on BBC that doesn’t become watered down with each season and instead becomes much more worthwhile as new characters and scenarios are introduced. It’s sad to see Ghosts finally come to an end with the upcoming season, but knowing that also adds excitement as the creators are sure to leave with a bang.
As far as the plot goes, Ghosts revolves around Alison Cooper and her husband, Mike Cooper, who move into an inherited home only to find out that it’s haunted by not one, but countless ghosts of people who had died there. After a fall from the window brings her momentarily close to death, she unlocks some sort of spiritual vision that allows her to see and talk to these ghosts. The Coopers have no choice but to somehow start coexisting with these unlikely housemates.
Ghosts: Filming Location
Most of the show takes place within the Button House, and we rarely get to see the actors leaving their homes. The house that we see in Ghosts is just as abandoned, with no one living in the mansion. Ever since they started filming for the show in the mansion, they’ve used the chance to renovate and build up the broken places in the home.
With the first season of Ghosts having a successful start, filming for season 2 began in January 2020, and the producers managed to finish it before Covid-19 blew up. The third season’s shooting began sometime in 2021 and ended by April of that year. Considering the history of Ghosts’ filming schedules, the 5th season may have wrapped up its filming and will be coming out on BBC soon.
West Horsley Place
Inspired by the shows Edward III of England, Beetlejuice, and The Rocky Horror Show, the show started filming in the early months of 2019. Located in Surrey, the West Horsley building provided the best backdrop for filming ghosts; asides from being old and rich in history, the place is also perfectly big enough to shoot multiple shots at the same time.
The current owner of the house had a similar story to our main character Alex, as Bamber Gascoigne was unaware that the property would soon become his. When the Duchess of West Horsley Place passed away, she left behind this historical building that was eventually given to Gascoigne.
The Horsley building used to be in a much more dilapidated condition than what we see on the show, and it was Bamber that decided to sell a few things around the house to collect enough money for renovations. It’s been years since Gascoigne got the building, and the renovations are still going on to this day.
West Horsley Place not only serves as the filming location for Ghosts but was also featured in films like Harry Price: Ghost Hunter and the infamous Enola Holmes, starring Millie Bobby Brown, Helena Bonham Carter, and Henry Cavill. Other movies include My Cousin Rachel and The Crown. Both the interiors and exteriors were used in these TV shows and movies.
At present, Ghosts can be streamed on BBC Iplayer and Apple TV for viewers from the United Kingdom.
