Vinland Saga is a historical manga and anime series that takes place in England and Iceland during the 11th century. The plot centers around Thorfinn, who is the son of a famous Viking known as Thors, and how he leads his life after the death of his father. He joins this group of young mercs who are led by Askellad.
Askeladd is one of the major characters in the story who is a Viking and a warlord. Even though he is shown as a frightening image of a ruthless warrior, Askeladd is portrayed as a complicated and dynamic figure with a clever intellect, a quick wit, and a high sense of honor and respect. In the whole season of the anime, he is shown to be that person who is able to make everyone work under him at all costs cunningly and has a very manipulative tactic in doing so.
He is such a person who is always thinking one move ahead compared to the opposition. He is someone who thinks about every situation in a well-strategized manner, always having an alternative plan if the current one fails. At the beginning of the series, we see Askeladd being hired by the King to kill Thorfinn because they saw him as a threat. After all, he could kill them any day in order to avenge his father’s death.
Relationship Between Askeladd And Thorfinn
In the series, both of them have a really complex relationship. Askeladd takes Thorfinn under him as a warrior, trains him to battle, and teaches him many other things. However, during this whole process, Thorfinn never really showed complete interest in whatever Askeladd would try teaching him because he knew that he was the person who had killed his father. Whatever may happen, he would avenge his death by taking revenge.
This makes Thorfinn always outdo himself and prove that he is the best when compared to Askeladd and often challenges him to battle several times. This creates a power struggle between the two, which makes Thorfinn respect him in a way because he is very intelligent in his decisions, and his order to his men would always prove right. Thorfinn, although they hated Askeladd, had a sense of admiration and hostility towards him.
As Thorfinn grows older and also a character, he comes to a realization that Askeladd is not the villain all along and he s just a tragic figure. He looks at all his decisions made in a much more mature way and tries to come to an understanding with his actions. There is a shift in the perspective Thorfinn sees him, which makes the relationship between the two very complex to interpret but equally adds a lot of depth.
