Demon Slayer is a series that’s set in a world where Demons and Humans coexist. But this coexistence is only because neither of the species has been successful in erasing the other. Demons are ex-humans who gave up their humanity for superpowers. Demon Slayers are specially trained people who are responsible for hunting down the Demons. Humans and Demons have been at war with each other since the beginning of time. These Demon Slayers have special Breathing Styles that they use to fight against the demons, where they’re taught how to control their breathing and use it to their advantage. The anime’s deuteragonist happens to be Kamado Nezuko, and here we shall look into 10 facts surrounding her.
Nezuko Kamado is the sister of the main protagonist of the show, Tanjiro Kamado. Nezuko is the only survivor from Muzan Kibutsuji’s attack on her family. Tanjiro, being the sole breadwinner of the family after the death of their father, was out running errands when his family was attacked. He came home to dead family members and his younger sister being turned into a Demon. Nezuko was injected with Muzan’s blood which turned her into a demon. Demons are vampiric species that feed on humans and are severely allergic to the sun. However, they gain extraordinary powers like regeneration, magic, and super strength. Demons have a natural murderous instinct to kill humans and devour them.
Who is Nezuko Kamado?
Nezuko Kamado is a Demon in the series. Although generally people intentionally choose to be demons, Nezuko was forcefully turned into a Demon by the Demon King himself. She accompanies her brother in his quest to find a cure for her and to turn her back into a Human. Before being turned into a Demon, Nezuko was a very sweet girl who would look out after her younger siblings and was always seen smiling and happy. Even after she’s turned into a human, she doesn’t lose her sense of protection and possessiveness over people she cares about.
She doesn’t hesitate to get into harm’s way if it means she could keep her brother safe. Nezuko is probably the only demon who is able to control her demonic urges to the point where she doesn’t need any human consumption to survive. She’s a very loved character by the entire fandom, and her adorableness is not the only reason for her being a fan favorite.

So, here are the Top 10 Facts on Nezuko Kamado:
1. Nezuko is Different from other Demons
Apart from being able to control her Demon tendencies, Nezuko was able to manipulate her size at will. She can turn herself into a child to save herself from attacks and then grow big enough to be the same size as that of an Adult Demon. Despite being a kid, Nezuko has very strong legs. The blood of Muzan gave her all these special abilities that are usually not seen in other Demons. As the series progresses, she is able to develop her own Blood Demon Art.
2. Nezuko was Asleep for Two Years Straight
After she was turned into a Demon by Muzan, she fell into a state of comatose for two years straight. During this time, Tanjiro started his training with Urokodaki. The reason for Nezuko’s two-year slumber was the weakness that her body felt after having the blood from her body drained and be replaced with Muzan’s. While she was in a coma, Urokodaki took it upon himself to make sure that she didn’t go completely rogue after she woke up. He would whisper in her ear while she regained her physical strength.
3. Nezuko Lost Her Speaking Skills
After being turned into a demon, Nezuko lost the ability to express herself using words. She would growl or roar in response to any question she would be asked. When she was given the bamboo muzzle, she would only respond to Tanjiro in small noises. The muzzle was so that she could control her Demon desire for human blood and flesh. Even after she was able to turn back to human, Nezuko had a hard time conversing. This could be due to the fact that she hadn’t talked in such a long time.
4. Nezuko’s Eyes Changed Colours
Nezuko had Red Eyes as a human, and they changed into Pink after her Demon transformation. This was not the only physical change her body went through after she turned into a demon. Nezuko grew long fangs which would help her if she were to feed on human bodies, either for their flesh or their blood. She also attained long, claw-like nails, which would help her in hunting for her prey.

5. Nezuko Could Stay In the Sun
The sun is deadly for demons. If a Demon were to be in sunlight, it would be very quick before they would be burned to death. Nezuko was called The Chosen Demon by Muzan because of her ability to walk in the sun without being harmed. Demons, like vampires, can only move around during the night because of this reason. Muzan was envious of Nezuko and wanted to consume her for this reason. He believed that if he ate her, he would also gain the ability to walk in the sunlight without being harmed.
6. Nezuko’s Diet was Different from that of Other Demons
Unlike other demons who would feed on human flesh and blood to survive, Nezuko had developed a very strong willpower to not fall for her temptations. She would sleep for a long time to recover and regain her energy. Nezuko’s ability to gain back her energy without consuming any Human flesh or blood was another trait that made her different from the other demons. She would regenerate very quickly, and this ability of hers was often compared to that of other Upper Moon Demons.
7. Nezuko has a Manic Demon Mode
Although Nezuko retained her human traits even after turning into a Demon, there were instances when she would lose her cool. Nezuko would throw a fit of rage which would put her in her Demonic Hysterical Mode. When she’s in this phase, horns grow out of her forehead and we see vines wrapping around her body. Nezuko would start craving Human Blood in this state which would make her extremely risky to be around. The only person who was able to snap her out of this state of hers was her brother Tanjiro. He would sing her a lullaby that their mother would sing for them when they were kids. The sound of Tanjiro singing the lullaby would calm her down and help her revert back to her normal state.
8. Nezuko was Muzan’s Revenge Plan
Muzan was terrified of the people who wore Hanafuda earrings, which is why he took it into his own hands to end their lineage. He planned to kill all the members of the Kamado family after the death of Nezuko’s father. Their mother was very weak, and the siblings were too young to be able to defend themselves. Muzan killed Nezuko’s mother and her siblings, except for Tanjiro, who was not home during his attack. Muzan turned Nezuko into a demon in hopes that if there were any Kamado heir he could not kill, Nezuko would do that job for him. But his plan backfired when she emerged as an even stronger Demon than the Muzan himself.

9. Nezuko’s Demon Blood Art is Pink in Colour
After the awakening of her Demon Blood Art at Mount Natagumo during the battle between Tanjiro and Rui, it is revealed that her blood burns in flames of Pink. Bakketsu, the other name for Exploding Blood Technique, turns into pink flames upon use. This flame can only hurt other demons when used. Nezuko uses the Exploding Blood Technique to light up Tanjiro’s sword when he is fighting against Rin. This made it easy for Tanjiro to slice Rin’s head right off.
10. Nezuko’s Name was Perfect for Her
As if her whole personality is based around her name, Nezuko’s name is the most perfect name one could have for her. The meaning of the first kanji of her name, “Nezu” means Red Bean. In Japanese culture’s symbolism, this means ” repelling off Demons”. This symbolism comes from the ceremony of throwing beans called Setsubun. The second kanji of her name, “Ko,” means Child and is a very common feminine name. So her name basically means a child warding off demons. Which, when we look at the series and its plot, is very fitting. Nezuko fends off Demons but also being under the care of Tanjiro, giving the “kid” in her name meaning.
