Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard has returned to Reddit after a six-month absence to thank fans for their support following the studio’s major update on the future of the Fallout and The Elder Scrolls franchises. His comments come shortly after Bethesda confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 is in full production, Fallout 5 has entered pre-production, and several additional Fallout projects are in development with partner studios.

The roadmap marked one of Bethesda’s most transparent updates in years, outlining plans for its biggest franchises while also confirming closer collaboration with studios including Obsidian Entertainment and ZeniMax Online Studios. The announcement followed widespread discussion about Xbox’s recent layoffs and the future direction of Bethesda’s development teams.

Todd Howard explains why Bethesda shared more information

Posting on Reddit, Howard acknowledged that Bethesda has often remained quiet about projects until they are much closer to release. He said the latest update was intended to give players a clearer picture of what the studio has been building.

“Today’s info was an attempt at changing that and letting everyone know what we’ve been working on the past several years, and a look at what’s coming.”

Howard also revealed that he regularly follows discussions within the community, describing himself as “a professional lurker.” He added,

“Know we’re constantly listening and keep telling us how to be even better. You’d be surprised how many great ideas I get from Reddit.”

Community feedback continues to shape Bethesda’s games

Howard’s remarks reinforce Bethesda’s longstanding claim that community feedback plays a meaningful role in game development. Recent Starfield updates have incorporated several player-requested features, including quality-of-life improvements and gameplay options, suggesting the studio actively reviews community suggestions after launch.

The roadmap also confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 6 remains Bethesda’s next major release and is currently playable while in full production. Meanwhile, Fallout 76 continues to receive support, with Bethesda planning another major expansion alongside native current-generation console versions.

Although many fans welcomed the increased transparency, the announcements arrived during a difficult period for Xbox following significant layoffs across its gaming division. As a result, excitement surrounding Bethesda’s future projects has been tempered by concerns over staffing and the long-term impact on development.

Even so, Howard’s return to Reddit and his reassurance that Bethesda continues listening to its community suggest the studio intends to maintain a closer dialogue with players as development on its biggest franchises moves forward.
